Your baby is here!

Congratulations on the arrival of your newest family member!

At the start, the main things a baby needs are just love and affection. That's what makes parents so important. But you'll soon need to turn your attention to the things that can help make things simpler, more enjoyable and safer. All of our products are manufactured and developed with the safety and needs of children in mind. IKEA works with some of the leading international childhood experts, carries out strict risk assessments and meets the most rigorous safety standards, giving you peace of mind and meaning that you can focus on your baby.

The importance of sleep

For the first few months of their life, your baby will be asleep most of the time, sleeping around 20 hours a day. Babies need sleep to recharge and to develop their immune system, their brain and their muscles. This is especially true during the first year of life, during which babies develop at an astounding rate. That's why it's important to create the perfect environment for a restful sleep, with a dark bedroom at a maximum temperature of 18ºC.

There are different sleeping arrangements to choose from for your baby, but here are some of the things to take into account to ensure their safety if you choose for them to sleep in a crib:

Crib

Crib

This is the safest place for a baby to sleep. The bars prevent falls and ensure proper ventilation.

We have tested our cribs by subjecting them to impact from a 10 kg weight that is dropped 1,000 times. We have also ensured that the bars are attached securely and cannot come loose, ensuring that no dangerous gaps open up where your baby's head, or other parts of their body, could get stuck.

Of course, the paints and materials that we use on our beds are non-toxic, because we know that small children love to taste and bite anything within their reach.

Mattress

Mattress

During the first few months of their life, a baby is unable to get up or move if something is covering their nose or mouth and stopping them from breathing. That's why our crib mattresses are compliant with all applicable safety standards and we perform tests to ensure that the baby's head doesn't sink too far down into the mattress.

It's important to choose a mattress that is the right size for your crib to prevent any gaps where your baby could get stuck.

You can choose from different thicknesses, safe in the knowledge that they all offer proper ventilation and most of them come with removable, washable covers and safety zips so that children can't open them and get the filling in their mouths.

Bedding

Bedding

During the first year, the safest approach is for your baby to sleep without a pillow, duvet or any toys in their bed. This is to avoid anything covering their face. Use fitted sheets and sleeping bags that will offer a stable temperature.

After their first birthday, your baby will be able to use a duvet and soft pillows. All of our fabrics are tested to ensure that they don't contain any chemical products or substances that could harm a baby's skin, such as phthalates or flame retardants.

Plus, all the cotton in our products is sustainably sourced.

Keep everything to hand...

Having a well-organised nursery where everything is within easy reach doesn't just make life easier for the parents, it also promotes healthy development in the child. This is key to building a feeling of trust and security in the parent-child relationship. It also reduces the risk of accidents and creates a safe environment for the baby to explore. Here are some of our top tips on choosing the right changing table, chest of drawers and wardrobe.

Changing table

Changing table

A good changing table isn't just a place for changing nappies, it also provides easy access to different things that will make everyday tasks easier.

Our changing tables come with built-in storage as standard, so that you can keep all of your essentials – like nappies, wipes and creams –handy. Plus, safety is always our top priority when it comes to designing our baby furniture. That's why our changing tables feature raised edges to ensure that the changing mat, whether foam or inflatable, stays put.

Chest of drawers

Chest of drawers

There are many benefits to adding a chest of drawers to your baby's bedroom:

It offers efficient storage for clothes, nappies, toys and other essentials for your baby. Plus, by organising your little one's clothes in compartments that they can reach, you can encourage them to be independent as they start to grow.

Our children's chests of drawers also promote safety as they are anchored to the wall and have rounded edges, ensuring a safe environment for your baby.

Wardrobe

Wardobe

And, if you need more storage, a wardrobe will never go amiss in your baby's bedroom. It's not just the perfect place to store all their clothes, it's also great for hiding away larger objects and keeping the room looking tidy.

If the wardobe has adjustable shelves or modules, like our SMÅSTAD series, it will be able to adapt to your little one's changing needs. Plus you can customise it to create the perfect setting.

Baby changing and bathing

Nappy changes are an essential part of your baby's day. They have delicate, fragile skin that it's your job to keep free of redness and irritation. Nappy changing and bathtime.

Yourchanging table is your best friend when it comes to washing your baby and changing their nappy quickly as it allows you to do your routine at a comfortable height. Try to keep everything to hand, IKEA changing tables feature storage, giving you a place to put your nappies, creams, wipes and other accessories.

For bath time, use a moulded baby bath. With one of these small baths with rounded edges, your baby will have fun while they discover the water. When it's time to get out, wrap them up in soft towels and a hooded dressing gown.

A baby in a dressing gown puts its hands in a white plastic LÄTTSAM bath.

Feeding time

Before you know it, your baby will be eating everything. They'll also start getting used to different types of food, with its tastes, smells and textures. That's why we carry out safety testing and none of our products for your little ones contain BPA, phthalates or any other harmful chemicals.

Once your little one is sitting up, it's a good idea to use a highchair with a supporting cushion at first. By being seated at the dining table with the rest of the family, your baby will develop a sense of belonging and begin to associate food with enjoyable experiences like sharing and looking after one another.

Learning through play

Little ones love to play. It's the best way for them to learn and grow while having fun. During the first six months of their life, play means exploring their surroundings and developing their senses. Our toys are designed to be both stimulating and safe. They are thoroughly tested so that children can suck them, chew them and play with them without getting hurt

Once they reach the age of six months, your baby is ready to start developing their fine motor skills and logical thinking with toys such as MULA stacking rings or MULA coloured building blocks. Of course, the paint and varnish that we use are non-toxic, so that your baby can suck and chew their toys to their little heart's content.

Health and safety

At IKEA, safety is our top priority. When choosing our materials and designs, we perform risk assessments and we meet the strictest legal requirements on designing products for little ones.

But we don't stop there. We carry out additional safety tests. You can rest easy, knowing that the paint on your children's furniture is non-toxic and the fabrics and plastics don't contain any harmful chemicals, neither do the toys include any small parts that could come loose.

Babies are curious and imaginative and it's difficult for us adults to eliminate every potential risk that arises once our baby starts to move around.

Before your baby starts to crawl and stand on their own, it's important to anchor your furniture to the wall and move fragile and dangerous objects out of reach. We've designed the PATRULL and UNDVIKA series to help make your home safe, with baby monitors, drawer latches, safety plugs for wall sockets, and many more products.
