Seven sustainable IKEA furniture items and products

Have you been thinking more about the environment and how you can help the planet lately? Spoiler alert! There are so many things you can do without even leaving your own home. Leading a more sustainable life doesn't just involve large-scale actions to protect our ecosystem's flora and fauna.

There are small ways and touches that can help protect our environment and our health, like making good decisions when buying things for our home. In this article, you'll find products that have been specially designed and adapted for the good of our planet. Making more sustainable decisions has never been easier!

IVAR with bamboo doors

Turn your shelves from our classic IVAR shelving unit into a closed cabinet and do the planet a favour at the same time. As you might have guessed, these specially designed IVAR doors are made of bamboo, which is actually a kind of grass that grows much faster than ordinary grass. In fact, it grows so fast that calling it a 'renewable resource' is almost an understatement.

What's more, this material is very strong and durable, an aspect to consider when buying furniture if you want to save money and be sustainable.

Did you know that we've been making this shelving unit for 50 years? It has always been one of our most popular modular shelving units thanks to its quality and versatility as it can be customised to suit any home. Now, in addition to making this out of renewable wood, we wanted to go one step further and update it with these environmentally friendly bamboo doors.

A sofa made from recycled materials

VINLIDEN is our new sofa with a high back, spacious seats and very special covers: soft and sustainable. Not only will the HAKEBO sofa cover make you want to spend more time on the sofa, it will also help you feel better in yourself. Why? Because it's made from 100% recycled polyester, one of the many products that we have at IKEA that give a second life to the waste generated by our society.

A lamp made from 100% recycled polyester

The VINDKAST lamp is also made from 100% recycled polyester. It may not sound particularly cosy but it is a very soft material. A perfect lamp for your bedroom or dining room, or anywhere you want to add a sophisticated touch to your room. A design accessory to no doubt add personality and enhance your space.

A bamboo wardrobe

There is a lot of talk about renewable resources these days, but do you know what the most sustainable wood is? This knowledge is important to make good choices when buying furniture. And bamboo is a truly sustainable material as it is a fast-growing plant that doesn't need pesticides or chemicals to flourish. Not only that, but it's light, very strong and looks natural and simple. That's why we chose it to make the NORDKISA wardrobe.

A bed that grows as they do

Children grow up, which is great, but your pockets might not think the same. Before, we had to keep buying beds every once in a while to adapt their bedroom as they grew. Not anymore, all thanks to our SUNDVIK children's bed!

This children's bed is extendible, which means it will stay with your little ones as they grow and it will also give your wallet a little rest. So why do we say that this option is sustainable? Because you will avoid having to buy another piece of furniture so, on a small scale, you will be preventing a tree from being cut down and more chemicals being used for paint and varnish

A more sustainable plastic bag?

ISTAD BAGS aren't like normal bags. They're made of 85% renewable material, mostly sugar cane. These bags are also reusable and can be used to store your food in the freezer. Using more sustainable materials like this, we've saved around 75,000 barrels of oil a year, so we've significantly reduced our carbon footprint.

Sustainable food counts too

Are delicious, sustainable meatballs possible? Among the food products in our Swedish Food Market and in-store restaurants, you can get our HUVUDROLL plant balls. They have the appearance and taste of our classic meatballs but only produce 4% of the environmental footprint during production.

We love it when customers use our products in a creative way. Why not try to do something new with them yourself? But remember that any modifications or changes that you make to IKEA products will prevent them from being resold or used for their original purpose, thus invalidating IKEA product warranties and your right to return them.
