Planning for purging and furniture transport

Planning a move is mostly about hauling your furniture and cleaning out your place. Asking friends versus professionals has a huge impact on the cost of your move. Clearing out. You can sell, give away or donate quite a lot of it. This is good for your wallet and the environment. Throwing things away should always be the last resort.

Two more tips for a smooth move: Go through the entire moving route in advance. Checking out the roads, doors and doorways ahead of time can help you avoid unexpected problems on the big day. And finally, if you have a plan detailing how you want to set up your new house, it will save you from unnecessarily moving boxes and furniture about.

Clearing out & planning your move with a removal company

You can also plan to enlist the help of people you know for your move. Friends, family and colleagues are often happy to help - all you have to do is ask. Although you will spend more time organising, you will save a lot of money this way.

Moving help

Hire removal company, ask helpers about available transport, draw up a schedule, plan to have food and drinks, organise moving tools such as hand trucks and straps in advance. This last point means that the more organised you are when you pack up everything, the faster the move will go. Finding people to help out really makes a difference. Our tip: It's best to only ask people you can really rely on. Why should you plan to have ten helpers when only five show up on the day of your move?

Don't forget to plan ahead:

Did you know that when you move, your insurance premium can change, too? It's a good time to compare. Take a look at our IKEA Household insurance - the IKEA-style house content insurance: fast, uncomplicated, affordable.

You can easily take out the insurance online. This way you can be sure of a high level of insurance protection, without any complicated frills, and you can cancel it at any time. Plus, you get a gift card every year if you don't have a claim.

To be sure that you're well insured in your new home.

Pack smart for your move

The most important tips for packing at a glance: Create an overview and buy ample packing materials that you can return if you don't use them. Label moving boxes and go about things systematically. A list of boxes is very helpful. Start collecting newspaper ahead of time for wrapping dishes and pack unnecessary items weeks before things start to get busy. Do this so that you can devote your time to more important things later on.

Which packaging materials will you need and how much of each?

By clearing out everything beforehand to get an overview of what you really want to take with you to your new home, you will have already accomplished a great deal. This will also give you a really good idea of what kinds of packaging materials you will need and how much of each. Everything that you want to give away, donate or sell should be done in advance. You should have ample removal carts and straps to avoid injuries while moving.

It's rarely a good idea to just chuck everything into a packaging box willy nilly. Labelling packaging boxes is the key to an organised move. It's best to create a list of your boxes so you know what is packed where. Another general rule of thumb: pack unimportant items first. Ideally weeks before your move so you don't have to think about it during the stressiest part of your move.

It's also important to take the time to clean out all your closets and wardrobes and put everything systematically into moving boxes. This way moving your clothes to your new home and putting them away can be done quickly and in an orderly fashion.

Next tip: don't overfill your packaging boxes. 35 pounds per box is plenty. The best idea is to pack both lightweight and heavy objects together. Remember: reserve one packaging box exclusively for emergency items such as medicines, toiletries, etc. These should always be readily at hand.

The big day is here!

On the day of your move, place a no-parking sign in front of your old place and new residence, clarify the timeline with the removal van company and have food and drinks ready for your helpers. The most important tip: stick to your plan. Prepare a timetable beforehand which everyone needs to observe. This can be arranged around the pick up and drop off times for the removal van.

You need to have enough room to move your stuff in and out. This is why you should secure a space in front of both your old home and your new home. Either put up homemade signs, or officially apply for a no-parking zone permit. If you're carrying out the move yourself, make sure to pick up the van or vans on time. Also clarify when you need to return the vehicle(s). Try to set up a generous buffer time with the rental company so you are under less stress and time pressure. The pick up and drop off times will determine the start and end of moving day.
