What is the difference between counter stools and bar stools with backs?

Counter and bar stools are similar in design and purpose, and the two terms are often used interchangeably. The primary difference between bar and counter stools is their height, with bar stools being taller. Bar stools are often the best choice for placement at a home bar, breakfast bar or other high dining surface.

• Counter height stools are typically shorter than bar stools, but taller than most dining chairs or bar chairs. Many counter stools are between 22” and 26” in height from floor to seat to accommodate seating at kitchen islands and other counter-level dining surfaces.
• Bar stools are taller than counter height stools, typically measuring between 28” and 30” from floor to seat to accommodate higher bar top seating. As with counter height stools, the total height of the stool will depend on the style you choose. For example, bar stools with backs are often taller overall than those without backs, but both will have a similar seat height. Have a specific height in mind?
