Do I always need the TRÅDFRI gateway?

You don't need a gateway to control smart devices with the remote control, sensor, dimmer or on-off button. Do you want to use the IKEA Home Smart app to control all your smart devices via your phone? In that case you can choose the gateway in combination with at least one of the four control units.
