How to choose a rug for your dining table

As with any good get together with friends or family, the event is underpinned by a good meal, while the after dinner conversation is what makes it unforgettable. But a wobbly chair that's half off the rug doesn't help at all. Check out the following tips for dining room rugs that will make everything perfect.

In the dining room, everything revolves around the table

The table and chairs are what define the size of the rug, so the first thing you need to do is measure. Don't be afraid to get the tape measure out – it's really important to have a clear idea of the space taken up by the table and the table and chairs combined, as well as the space that will be used while eating and the available space. Our general tips about measurements are below.

  • The rug should be bigger than the table and chairs combined, even with the chairs pulled out. For example, if on average a person takes up 75 cm, at a minimum the rug should be 1 metre wider than the table on each side where there are chairs.
  • These rugs should be easy to clean, easy to maintain and flat enough so that chairs and stools can be moved easily.
  • Flatweave rugs are usually easily to clean and maintain. Many of them are also reversible.
  • The feet of chairs and stools will get stuck in high-pile rugs.
  • Jute and sisal rugs are perfect for the dining area.
  • A dark rug under a light-coloured dining set – or the opposite – creates a contrast that makes the whole lot pop really nicely.

Rugs for four-seat dining tables

Unless you only have a small square table with four chairs, four-seat dining tables generally have chairs on two sides. In this case, you should pick a rug that's longer than the length of the table, but also wide enough so that the chairs are still on it when they're pulled out.

Rugs for six-seat dining tables

Six-seat dining tables usually have chairs on all four sides, so in this case you need to take the total size into consideration – the rug should be substantially longer and wider than the table.

Rugs for eight-seat dining tables

If you have an eight-seat dining table, generally you also have a fairly big space. In this case, the principle is the same – you should measure the whole space carefully. If a single rug doesn't fill the whole space, you can also combine different ones to create a bigger impact and cover a larger area. You just need to make sure the edges of the rugs are compatible, which you can do with our STOENSE, TYVELSE and LANGSTED rugs.
