How to choose a bedroom rug

There's no worse feeling – you wake up in the morning, with a red face and puffy eyes from sleeping so much, there's a warm ray of sunshine lighting the room, you stretch and sit on the edge of your bed and boom! Your feet hit the cold floor. You can avoid this nightmare with a good bedroom rug. But not just any rug. Read on.

In the bedroom, everything revolves around the bed

Obviously! That's why the rugs you choose for your bedroom should add warmth and style, but also be functional in a way that doesn't ruin the magic.

Here are some tips to bear in mind:

  • Smooth-textured rugs make for comfortable bedrooms.
  • Dense rugs add more comfort, and sheepskin rugs are naturally thick, spongy and dense.
  • Small cotton and polyester rugs are smooth on the feet and easy to wash.
  • Animal skins and leathers create comfort, especially when getting out of bed.
  • Create a tranquil environment by using rugs with neutral colours and designs.
  • Flatweave rugs are a great choice for children's rooms. They're easy to clean, robust and have a non-slip surface on the bottom.

Single beds

A single bed, in a teenager's room for example, is often placed against one of the walls, meaning there's only one side to put a rug. That means there are more possibilities – you can choose small rugs (TIPHEDE, LANGSTED), big rugs (TIDTABELL, MORUM), or even shaped rugs (STOENSE, AFTONSPARV, IDROTTSHAL). Let your imagination run wild and add a playful touch to the bedroom.

If the single bed is in the middle of the room, the rug should be wide enough to cover the three individual possibilities: the sides and the foot of the bed, like the rugs in the MORUM, LUGILD, LOHALS and ONSEVIG series.

Double bed

Double beds mean there are two options: a single rug or two individual rugs. In both cases, what matters is that the width is more than the bed and two bedside tables. But if you choose a single rug, it should be big enough to reach past the foot of the bed – it's up to you whether it needs to be big enough to go under the bedside tables.

On the other hand, two individual rugs give you more to work with as they could be rectangular or shaped, but they shouldn't protrude from the foot of the bed.

Put them side by side

Combining two big rugs side by side with the seam under the bed gives you a large, plush base for the bed that also transforms the vibe of the room by softening the acoustics. A low pile is a smart choice as it’s a bit easier to keep clean.

Runners around the bed

Placing your rugs like runners around the bed is another way of adding comfort that softens your first steps in the morning. This way, you can clean under the bed easily and take the rugs outside to air.

A creative collage of rugs

Using the decorative aspect of rugs and making a collage around your bed can be a great idea. This emphasises the bed as the centrepiece of the room and lets you add your own personal touch. When you want to refresh your bedroom, just change up the layout of the rugs. With so many possibilities, you'll never get bored!
