A home visit: how to renovate a small bedroom

Having a small bedroom doesn't have to limit our creativity when it comes to making the most of it. Every corner is a possibility both in terms of decoration and storage. We want to show you different ideas with this 'before and after' of a small bedroom. We've doubled the space and made it beautiful. Want to see it? We recommend you don't miss out.

Before and after: gaining storage space

Although the decoration of this bedroom wasn't bad, there was a lot of room for improvement. But, above all, what interested us most about this space was the possibility of giving it more functionality, more order and more storage capacity. That's why we started with the bed.

When square metres are scarce in a small bedroom and we don't have large storage furniture, the bed becomes the epicentre for our ideas. Because, if you swap your bed frame bed for a divan bed base, we guarantee that you will gain an enormous amount of space. Inside, you can organise everything with storage boxes and vacuum-sealed bags.

Open storage in small spaces

Let's continue our tour of the 'before and after' of this small bedroom. The space behind the door was quite small (I'm sure that this is true for many of you), so a cabinet with hinged doors was not an option. The bedroom already had a rail installed behind the door for hanging clothes, but this wasn't enough either.

So what did we do? We installed an open storage system with space to hang clothes, drawers and a high shelf to keep those things that are least used. A wonderful solution that takes up very little space.

Take advantage of structural features

If you have some kind of structural element in your small bedroom such as a fireplace, a window, some kind of shelf or mantelpiece... take advantage of it! In this case, instead of neglecting this fireplace that is no longer of use, we took inspiration from its old style and made it a focal point of our small bedroom. We love it! By turning the fireplace mantelpiece into a display stand, we added a series of small decorative details that lend personality without overwhelming the room. Don't you think so?

Choose multifunctional furniture

Another important step in the 'before and after' of a small bedroom is to always have multifunctional furniture that helps us to meet several needs at once. One of our favourite examples is this multipurpose mirror that has three 'aces up its sleeve'. On the one hand, a well-placed mirror always helps to make a small room more spacious. On the other hand, the hangers and shelf provide us with extra storage to keep and display accessories and items. And lastly, its bright colour brings vitality to a bare wall.

Modular and flexible furniture

A modular and flexible wardrobe can be adapted to your bedroom space, as well as to the different needs that evolve over time. In this case, the 'before and after' process was based on changing a bulky chest of drawers that were previously in this same space, for another open cabinet system that complements the one seen previously behind the door. It can easily be expanded with a new module, so it can grow with you, even if you decide to move house.

Decoration for the headboard wall

Decorating the walls of our small bedroom with photos is one of our favourite options. Especially when we do it in such an original way, like this. Before, the bedroom was completely white. But during the 'transformation', we decided to paint one of the walls green, specifically the headboard wall. In this way, the bed is made more prominent without the need for a headboard as imposing as the one we had before.

That's why we decided to paint the frames the same colour as the wall, so that it highlights what really matters: our memories. It's perfect!

We love it when customers use our products in a creative way. Why not try to do something new with them yourself? But do remember, any modifications or changes that you make to IKEA products prevent them from being resold or used for their original use, and so voiding IKEA product warranties and your right of return.
