A home visit: ideas for saving space on a small terrace
A terrace is a diamond in the rough in any home, even if it's smaller in size or covered. Want to learn how to make the most of it and let it shine? Take a walk through this small terrace with us and find out how you can save space and take advantage of your terrace's potential.
Go ahead!
We're constantly searching for more room in our homes. We never seem to have enough, and that's why we try to take advantage of every empty corner or gap. In outdoor areas such as narrow balconies and small terraces, this need becomes even more pronounced, pushing us to use our ingenuity and creativity to save as much room as possible while still designing a pleasant, practical space.
This covered terrace, for example, is only two metres wide, but thanks to a little IKEA ingenuity and know-how, we've found the perfect solutions to make sure that its residents don't miss out on anything. The secret? Multifunctional furniture, plants and personal touches.
Dual-function storage
When it comes to choosing storage options for small spaces, it's best to think vertical. A modular shelving unit like the one we've selected here, for example, makes full use of the height of the walls while taking up hardly any floor space, so you have room for everything you want to display.
This type of shelving is highly flexible and is designed for use in all kinds of spaces, so it looks good anywhere, including on this small terrace. And because it's open, we can use it to display everything we want nearby: books, plants, pictures... the things that make an enclosed terrace more personal and welcoming. Want an extra decorative touch? Use a string of lights to give the space more ambiance.
Add stackable furniture
Whether you plan to enjoy your small terrace alone or share it with others, we recommend that you add stackable or folding chairs to adapt the space to your needs at any given time. For example, on this terrace, we've opted for stackable stools to make the most of the space and take up as little room as possible. These stools can also be used as end tables, so we're again making use of dual functionality. You can also choose to use folding chairs and hang them on a hook or stack them against the wall.
Another potential option is to use a small bench with cushions on top and use the space underneath for storage. This way, there will always be room for everyone within the space available.
A multipurpose table
No matter how small it is, having a table on your terrace always ends up being a must. It can be used for breakfast in the morning, as a desk during the day, as a dining table during the summer, as a place to unwind and enjoy a drink, and of course as your preferred place to eat when the weather is nice.
For all these reasons, it goes without saying that whatever kind of terrace you have, a small table can provide you with endless possibilities. Look for one that fits the space – you can even consider using a folding table and anchoring it to the wall so that you can put it out when you need it.
Revitalise your space with plants
Most plants are dormant during the winter but as spring and good weather approach, you can liven up your terrace by adding some.
By grouping plants together, you'll increase the sense of nature present in your space, which will fill you with liveliness, joy and good vibes. Not only that, the properties found in plants are amazing! Succulents, for example, are natural air purifiers, so they're ideal for urban terraces.
Here, to decorate a small terrace with plants, you can take advantage of any surface, such as a ledge or a shelf on the shelving unit we set up, or you can choose to hang one from the ceiling. Oh, and don't forget – for best results, play around with pots of different shapes and sizes. What do you think?
