Back to School: Four desks for kids
The Back to School period is a really special time of year. A new school year is starting and children are excited to see their friends again, to wear their new clothes and to meet their new teachers… It’s a time full of emotion and anticipation, even though the first few days can be difficult, especially for the littlest ones.
To help you prepare, we want to show you four desks for small children aged between four and eight. As you’ll see, some are better for drawing and crafts, while others are designed for your children’s first homework assignments, such as the stylish study area pictured above. Having a dedicated desk helps kids get used to having a special area for their books and pencils from an early age.
Happy Back to School!
Drawing table for children
Most children love to draw. And we should be encouraging them to do more of it! Drawing facilitates communication between children and adults, helps kids to express themselves and relax and promotes emotional and cognitive development… So, as the new school year approaches, we think it’s a great idea to set up a craft corner in your kid’s room, like this one designed especially for children aged between three and six.
In this design, we’ve used the following tips to achieve a space that is as inviting as it is practical:
- We used natural textures and neutral colours as a backdrop to give the space an artistic touch.
- We opted for a desk and chair in light-coloured timber to contrast with the black chalkboard wall.
- Then we used some vibrant colours to add a little fun!
- A brightly coloured zigzag rug completes the look.
My first homework desk
As children get a little older, they’ll need a study area where they can do their homework every night. They need a desk that’s right for them and, since they’re going to be sitting down for longer, a comfortable chair that’s a little more grown-up and provides proper back support. It’s important that children learn to sit correctly from an early age.
If you want to create a space like this, we recommend opting for a neutral colour such as white for the larger pieces of furniture and adding a striking monochrome rug to define the space (this STOCKHOLM rug is made from soil-resistant wool and is easy to hoover).
A few pastel pink accents soften the look and keep it from feeling too grown up – after all, they’re still kids! We opted for pink tones and pale wood, but you can use your favourite colours, or better yet: their favourite colours!

Themed study area
Whether it’s animals, cars, space or a particular cartoon, we know that the smallest person in your house will be obsessed with something! So why not design their study area around it? That way, they’ll associate studying and homework with something they love.
Here, we’ve drawn inspiration from the cosmos and used white on a dark blue background to represent outer space. To complete the look, we painted a constellation of tiny stars on the wall and added some planets to the night sky (a few rice paper lamp shades). Looks out of this world, don’t you think?
The ‘whole shebang’ children’s study area
Our final design for a children’s desk area is our most comprehensive: it has everything a kid could ever need! This example demonstrates the importance of organisation and storage when planning a space for art, play and study, and how essential shelves and boxes are.
Feel free to add to this space, which is dedicated to your child and their personal growth. Add a blackboard so that they can draw or write messages, install the right lighting for the space in general and for the table in particular and decorate with their favourite stuffed animals and toys.
