Put an end to the chaos at the bottom of your drawers

You might not have realised it, but drawers are small black holes in your house where objects, papers, keys and any other things that we don’t know where to put or how to organise tend to accumulate. They end up getting all mixed up and cause us to waste a lot of time trying to find them.

Numerous scientific studies have shown that physical order helps to calm the mind and who isn’t in need of a bit of calm these days?

At IKEA, we want you to improve your well-being and enjoy your home and a peaceful lifestyle, which is why we have plenty of organisation and storage solutions for all those untidy corners.

Here’s how to use boxes and other organisers in chests of drawers and drawer units anywhere in the house, whether they are inside a wardrobe or in a bedside table, so they don’t look like the bottom of Mary Poppins’ bag.

The IKEA organisation method

  • The first step in getting organised is to group and categorise everything to be organised. You can group your things according to how you use them, how often you use them or by their purpose.
  • Reduce, reuse or recycle things that you no longer use, you don’t like or that are broken or in poor condition.
  • Decide what you want to keep and work out how much space you will need for it. This way, you will be able to make the most of every inch of drawer space and maximise its capacity.
  • Choose the most suitable space to store your things: inside a drawer unit, on top of the wardrobe, on hangers – think about all the possibilities that your home offers.
  • Choose your preferred storage system and the one most suitable for the space you will be using.

Boxes: our best friends

Boxes are our best friends when it comes to organising our drawers. And we’ve already thought about the type of box that you need for each space. All you need to do is choose your favourite material: metal, wood, raffia... and exactly where you’re going to put them.

Immaculate drawers

Once you have followed the above steps and chosen your boxes, you can start putting your clothes and accessories inside your wardrobe, drawer unit or bedside table.

For example, SKUBB boxes are perfect for storing clothes for other seasons, underwear and t-shirts, making it super easy to change out your wardrobe and decide what to wear each day.

Quick stop in the bathroom

When it comes to tidy bathroom drawers, GODMORGON boxes are the real star. They are transparent, so you can see all your cosmetics or toiletries when you open the drawer, letting you sleep for an five extra minutes, as you won’t waste any time when doing your hair or make-up.

Don’t forget about the workspace!

Just like our clothes and toiletries, papers, books and work tools all need to have a purpose and a dedicated space within our home so that everything runs perfectly.

KUGGIS boxes are one of our favourite options; their variety and versatility mean they fit perfectly in any space.

The options are endless – you can combine boxes with baskets, glass jars or use your own accessories as decorative items: bags, sunglasses or watches.

Organise your pantry too

When following this organisation method, it is essential that you sort your pantry into categories. If you store all your products mixed together in your pantry, it will be harder for you to know when some will expire and you’ll have to throw away more food.

Ideally, each type of food should be divided into categories: for example, legumes on one shelf and fresh produce on another shelf, with both being easily accessible. Most importantly, you should keep the food you consume the most close at hand and what you don’t need every day on the higher shelves.

And you should use transparent glass jars so that you can to find everything easily. You could also write the contents or best before date of the product on its jar. Here’s a link to all of our jars and tins in case you need containers for organising your pantry or kitchen!

Did you know that we waste over 5,000 hours looking for things at home? We hope that if you’ve made it this far, that time will be less and you can invest more time into your well-being.

We love it when customers use our products creatively. Why not try to do something new with them yourself? But do remember, any modifications or changes made to IKEA products will prevent them from being resold or used for their original purpose, thus invalidating IKEA product warranties and your right to return them.
