How to set a garden table for a celebration

Eating outdoors is something we all like. So we talked to Belgian blogger Yvonne Eijkenduijn, a lover of interior decoration, who gave us some great ideas for our garden or patio celebrations. "Whether for parties or special celebrations, I like decorating my big table outside. In fact, I'm always looking for any excuse to get the family together for a meal," she says. If you feel the same way, why not try Yvonne's outdoor decorating tips?

How to assemble a large table

You don't have to have a very large table if you're not going to use it regularly. You can improvise and set up a table with old wooden boards and some trestles. It's very easy to put away if you need to clear the space afterwards and an economical option that will last a lifetime.

For table decoration, choosing a combination of different dishes is a nice way to display your antique china or any other family heirloom, such as glassware or cutlery. You can play with different shapes, patterns and designs, but for the base, choose a simple, monochrome set. You can then add a colourful note with a floral arrangement. This tip also applies to glassware: the glasses and goblets can be taken from different sets. Don't you think they look great here?

Another of Yvonne's ideas is to bring the table to life with colourful food; this way you will can get your guests excited about the look, as well as the taste, of the food.  "Some foods are beautiful and decorative. Pomegranate gives salads a fantastic look," she says.

Natural features

Add a special touch to everyday items. Put a few mint leaves in a bottle of water and leave it in the fridge for about an hour so that the water absorbs all its flavour.

Keep it simple

"In our house, where white and cream tones are the main colours, there is an atmosphere of tranquillity," explains Yvonne. "I add hints of colour or classic patterns – like floral or gingham – to make the style feel individual."

Creativity at the table

Add a special touch to the table by using original ideas (lime wedges in a jar, flowers in a tea cup, etc.). If there are any lime wedges left over, put the lid on the jar and store it in the fridge.

I like to decorate the table with simple ornaments. They impress everyone.

Mix and match different fabrics

Instead of using just a single tablecloth, try layering a few complementary fabrics, in different sizes or with different patterns. Don't forget to place comfortable cushions on hard, wooden chairs.

Vintage and rustic

Combine traditional and Romanesque style products, such as dishes with decorated edges, with informal and natural-looking items, such as our cork coasters, wooden spoons or glass jars. "Personality is achieved through imperfection," says Yvonne.

Garden flowers

Try making a flower arrangement by cutting some flowers from the garden. "Flowers always look good and smell great; use them to brighten up your table decoration," Yvonne suggests.
