How to organise your desk to study for exams

Studying for exams this year? Has your study area been the same for years and you now want to give it a breath of fresh air? Studying for exams is something millions of people do worldwide, and it's no easy task. It requires plenty of hard work and sacrifice. That’s why the spot where you study is so important.

To effectively study for exams, staying focused for as long as possible is crucial; in most cases, this can’t be done without getting your things in order. We’re going to show you how to organise your desk to study for exams, focusing on order and storage. This will make the task easier, as well as promoting everyday well-being and concentration.

Keeping it tidy and organised is up to you... Let's begin!

Pegboard for organising your wall

Before getting to work on our study desk, let’s start by organising your nearest wall. Have you ever thought about how much space a SKÅDIS pegboard could save you, even if you also have bookcases or shelves?

Aside from being completely customisable with different accessories, it has many different uses:

  • To hang important notes, like lessons to study that day.
  • To file and store documents.
  • To keep little things you need every day at hand, like eyeglasses or a calculator.
  • To hang instant photos that motivate you in your day-to-day studies.
  • To store and organise small objects, like paper clips, in small suspended storage boxes.

Keep materials organised on your desk

When it comes to studying for most exams, you’ll need stationery material, like different coloured pens, highlighters, paper clips, sticky notes, notebooks, a planner, and so on. It's a lot of stuff that can’t just be strewn on your desk any which way! So to keep your desk organised when studying for exams, we recommend using an organiser like this one, with different sized compartments that fit your different materials and needs.

The larger compartments can hold papers or notebooks, while the smaller areas can be used for pens and other materials.

Keep your daily subjects on hand!

The subjects you need to study during the week can be stored and organised in open files like this one. This type of organiser doesn’t need to be placed on top of your desk, where it will take up more space: you can put it on top of a nearby bookshelf or even on a drawer unit... The most important thing is that it's close by and you keep it tidy.

You can also take advantage of this area near your desk to hang a small plant or some other decor to liven up a space dedicated to something as tough as studying for exams.

Store what you use less often in files and boxes

You most likely have documents, papers, lessons, and so forth, that you don’t use everyday but that you still need to keep stored and organised. We recommend you store all these items in filing boxes, where you can keep them perfectly organised and tidy. These files can be placed on a shelf near your desk, depending on the space you have available and your needs.

You can organise your papers by date, importance, alphabetical order, and so on. Choose the method you find most useful and stick with it, so you don’t waste time looking for what you need when you need it.

Must-have: a lamp for your study desk

If there’s something your study desk should never be without, it’s a lamp There are endless options when it comes to choosing the right one, but there are two things your study lamp should have no matter what: it should be adjustable and have a bulb with the right type of light. The best option for studying would be a goose-neck lamp with a neutral light of approximately 4000K, to prevent your eyes from getting tired.

Not sure about your bulbs’ voltage? Don’t worry. If you click the button below, you’ll find a guide where you can search for your bulb and clear up any doubts you may have. It will also be just what you need if you're looking to change your existing bulbs. Click below!

By the way, did you know that you can charge your phone with our RIGGAD lamp? If your phone is compatible with wireless charging, place it on top of the charger built into the base. You can also charge two devices at the same time, as the lamp also features a built-in USB port.

Fantastic!

Finally, if you have lots of books to study from, a great option is to keep things tidy and arrange them on a bookshelf near your desk. You can also use opaque boxes to store books you use less often or those that aren't as ‘nice-looking’ to display in your room.

And before you head off, don’t miss out on some other useful ideas for your study space:

We love it when customers use our products in a creative way. Why not try to do something new with them yourself? But do remember, any modifications or changes that you make to IKEA products will prevent them from being resold or used for their original use, thus invalidating IKEA product warranties and your right to return.
