In this case, we have used the BILLY in a décor scheme with complementary colours (i.e. colours on the opposite side of the spectrum) with the aim of creating bold, eye-catching contrasts. 40 years of history, but more radical than ever.

BILLY: the number one bookcase for many years
It was 1978 when Gillis Lundgren (the fourth member of staff to be taken on by IKEA) created our amazing BILLY bookcase. It was called BILLY in honour of a friend of Gillis who had asked him to design shelving for books that was genuinely useful, with an attractive, functional design.
Therefore, Gillis’ aim was to create an affordable bookcase that could be adapted to suit all kinds of people and all kinds of spaces. Years later, perhaps the number of paper books has fallen, but BILLY is still a timeless piece that remains fully customisable and will never look dated.
