Kitchen renovations: the five most common mistakes
If we can be sure of one thing in life, it’s that renovating a kitchen takes time and is easy to get wrong. That’s why we want to give you some ideas and helpful tips to prevent your kitchen refurb from becoming a real headache.
A full kitchen renovation usually takes about 10 to 15 days. We’re going to take a closer look at the most common mistakes, but if you’re sure you want to renovate your kitchen and need help, just request a kitchen planning appointment.
1. Think about everything that your kitchen will need before you start
One of the things that’s often left until last is kitchen lighting. And that’s one of the most common mistakes because once your kitchen is fitted it’s a real headache to install lighting. Remember that your electrical outlets and light sources should be hidden and, therefore, planned before you start renovating your kitchen.
2. Renovate with functionality in mind
Don’t let the beauty of your favourite kitchens cloud your vision. Think about functionality and the three types of space that every kitchen needs: spaces for preparation, cooking and storage. Take inspiration from our kitchen ideas and keep them in mind as you go along. When you’re spending hours in your brand new kitchen, you’ll be glad that you did.
3. Store logically and think about your day-to-day life
Although we tend to be more influenced by price or our renovation budget than by the practicality or functionality of our future kitchen, thinking about the latter can prevent storage problems. Place the items that you use most at a comfortable height and leave the upper shelves for objects that you don’t use as much.
4. Don’t skimp on the accessories
It’s normal to focus on what you can see: the kitchen cabinets, the worktops, the appliances... everything that will ultimately make your kitchen look great. But we should also keep part of our kitchen renovation budget for the things that we can’t see.
The organisation of cabinet interiors is key to finding things quickly and making good use of those pesky corners. Especially when renovating small kitchens.

5. Beware of fire
When deciding where to place your cooking area, especially if you have a gas hob, think about placing it at a safe distance from a window, for example, so that it doesn’t affect the air flow. And if it’s an open-plan kitchen, place the hob as far away as possible from the dining room.
6. Get professional advice
Looking at pictures of kitchens, it is very easy to find inspiration and decide whether you like a particular kitchen or not. But not getting advice, guidance and help from an expert to help you create your dream kitchen is another common mistake. It’s never too late and there’s always time to request an appointment to renovate your kitchen.
