Decorating using photos: frame your memories in an original way
Decorating with photos, pictures and posters in an original way is something that gives real personality to our home.

At IKEA, we love thinking about what will make the space we live in into a real home. One of the things that can really make a difference is decorating our walls with our photos or posters, or painting them in a creative way. These details show what we are like, what our tastes are and what we want to reflect in our home. That is why we want your memories to be reflected in the most original way possible. We have ideas to suit all tastes!
Paint your walls in an original way
If you have a completely empty wall and you would like something different and attention-grabbing, why not paint directly onto the wall?
You can do it yourself using geometrical shapes, with the help of duct tape to mark the edges of the space. In other words, mark out a shape you like with tape, and then paint inside it, and even a little on top of the tape. Peel off the tape, and you will see that it has turned out perfectly!
You could also commission a professional to make a really striking drawing on your wall, or you could put up a wall sticker that you like, with one or two other drawings - whatever’s appropriate for this particular area of your home. We think it’s a fantastic idea for a children’s room...
Create compositions with photo frames
As you already know, “a picture paints a thousand words”. So, what happens if we bring together lots of pictures in the same space? One of the ideas that most appeals to us is this:
Choose frames with the same finish (wood, white, black, metal, etc.) and of a more or less similar size. Then, put them all up on the wall together, lining them up horizontally and vertically. Almost like a game of Tetris!
For photographs, we recommend you choose a theme to work around. For example, photos of family members, of a particular trip, of your pet, of landscapes, etc. This way, you will create a kind of “memory corner” which will be of interest to everyone.
Showcase your favourite scenes of the natural world
Do you like to go for long walks in the countryside? Or do you prefer the mountains or the beach? It doesn’t matter! You can showcase the most beautiful aspects of nature in all its forms within your own home.
Take some green or dried leaves, twigs, even a little sand from the beach if you dare (although that is a little more complicated). To frame this, take off the backs of two photo and/or poster frames (made of cardboard or opaque paper) of the same size, and put together the glass sheets with what you want to display positioned between them.
See how several of these with plants can be used to create a kind of framed garden that can look quite stunning.
Hang your posters on a cord with clips.
If you’re the kind of person who quickly gets bored with what they have on display at home, why not change it once in a while? All you need to do is to fix two hooks, one at each end of the wall. From the hooks, hang a coloured cord and some material you like, and then you can put up photos, posters, drawings, postcards, etc., all attached with clips. And if you get bored with them or you want to update them? Swap them for others - nothing could be simpler!
Shelves for displaying all your pictures and photos
Using shelves to display all our photos and pictures can be a great idea. If you’d like something like that in your home, start by placing the widest shelves on the lower part - to give a greater impression of depth. You can also put books and magazines on there to make the most of the space.
The books don't all need to be visible: you can also play with perspectives and place some (the smaller ones) in front of the larger ones. In addition, bear in mind that if these are not fixed, you can change them around until you find the combination you like best.
A wall covered in all your memories
Your walls can be transformed into a true collage of treasured moments, including everything from black-and-white photos to pages from your favourite book. The only limit is your imagination!
We particularly like this idea for a teenager’s room, where he or she can look back on times with friends, memories sparked by concert tickets, song lyrics, anything that gives the bedroom its own life and style.
