Decor trend: this winter join the velvet

The trend of velvet decoration has come stomping this season 2018 / 2019. Want to know how to decorate your house with velvet?

As one of our designers says, "velvet is able to capture light in such a way that it can make a flat surface come alive." Velvet is a trend within our home during this season for many reasons: so incredibly welcoming it makes the spaces, for the warmth, for the elegance, many will seem a material with a somewhat classic, even old-fashioned style, but believe us if we tell you that you can get the most modern and modern rooms thanks to the decoration and even furniture like velvet sofas. Do you want to see it? It will surprise you...

A sofa that curls up like no other

For the last STOCKHOLM sofa we have worked with a velvet whose result looks simply spectacular. We chose this material for its cozy atmosphere, because it is a sofa for the whole family and practically for any type of room.

In addition, we tend to think that velvet is not a very resistant material, when it is not like that at all. If we take care of this sofa as we would with any other, we will have a sofa that will last us like new for years.

Do you want a few simple tips to keep the velvet shiny and unpolluted?

  • Start by protecting it from direct light, the sun and stronger heat, since these factors are its main enemies.
  • Also, avoid drinking sitting on a velvet sofa, because if you drop the drink can ruin it (as also happens with other materials).
  • To make it shine, do it with steam. Take a machine that expels steam and pass it, little by little, all over the sofa (always in the direction of the hair). Then, pass a soft brush to finish leaving it as good as new!
We’re much closer to the feeling of objects in a home. Outside, we see things every day and pass them by. In our living rooms, we interact with pieces, touching and moving them

At IKEA we use velvet that is even more sustainable

Did you know that velvet was produced centuries ago as a high-end fabric with silk fibers? Now it is a material that any of us can have at home in an affordable way.

In addition, at IKEA we use a cotton and velvet blend that is even more economical and sustainable than the rest. So it's easier than ever to do even with small accessories for our house, like cushions.

And, pay attention! Because, oddly enough, the velvet fits perfectly with harder and coarser materials such as metal and wood. Together they get a combination of the most interesting.

The incredible depth of its colors

Blue indigo, yellow ocher, crimson ... We love how the spectacular color palette of this season reflected in the velvet looks.

And it is that the depth and the variety of tonalities of a color that contributes a same element, has to do with the construction of the fabric: the fibers are interlaced between two layers and cut in the center to obtain a short and dense hair, with a reflective shine that is the one that achieves that variety of tones in the same color.

So much so, that this chair seems to us the best example: in itself it is the protagonist of the space thanks not only to its design, but also to its finish and its particular color. It does not need anything else!

Beyond aesthetics, velvet has many other qualities

Velvet is much more than mere aesthetics. It is much more than a living room or a beautiful bedroom. It also helps us to shelter our house in the coldest months of the year.

And is that when used for curtains, this heavyweight fabric provides some qualities of thermal insulation that virtually no other material achieves, as well as better privacy and sound insulation.

In the case of sofas, armchairs or cushions, we assure you that you will never feel as comfortable and warm as with velvet, being ideal for homes in cold areas.

Do you dare to introduce some velvet at home this season?
