4 original storage ideas for a kid's bedroom

Proper storage is essential anywhere in the house. The aim is to make the most of the space available in order to keep everything in place and perfectly organised. And in which room of the house is this especially necessary (and complicated)? In a teenager's room or kid's room!

If you fancy "breaking the rules" of traditional order and storage, and are looking for original kid's bedroom ideas where everything has its place, be sure to check out these recommendations. You'll love them!

1. Storage on the ceiling

Traditional storage is great and essential in any home. But when we have exhausted all options, when we want to be innovative, or simply when we want to use every little nook and cranny, we have to take it a step further!

In this first idea, we want to show you that it is possible to store all kinds of things on the bedroom ceiling. And without the need for a luggage compartment, loft or anything similar. It is, however, very important to consider the maximum load and to try to store objects that don't weigh too much.

Here we've used a combination of MULIG wall storage items in a completely new way. We have anchored it to the ceiling to help us store all those things that come out only now and then, perhaps no more than two or three times a year: camping mat, other seasonal clothes that you won't pull out until the time comes, and so on.

All of this, of course, does not need to be left out in the open. It is also a good excuse for fitting a canopy to the bed! Grab a fabric that you like, or even a curtain, and get to work! Take measurements and, with simple steel rods or cables like these (anchored to the ceiling as well), position it so that it folds and hides everything above.

2. Bed storage: with pockets!

Another original way to create more storage in a teen's room is to focus on the area around their bed. This idea is also great for kids, as it is super versatile and provides plenty of extra space to store all kinds of small objects that are used every day—including accessories, books, toys and even socks or underwear.

In addition to being a decorative piece around your bed, the MÖJLIGHET bed pocket offers plenty of space to organise and store what you want at your fingertips.

A good idea is to sort things by colour, activity, or day of the week for each compartment.

Doesn't it sound like a great idea?

As you can see, these ideas are super original, right? Yet there are many ways to store and organise things, depending largely on how your house is laid out.

3. Pockets on curtains

We're continuing with our series of original storage ideas for this bedroom. Are the curtains too long? Great! Sew the scraps from the bottom (at a taller height) to form a row of handy pockets where you can store small objects that otherwise have no home and end up strewn about the place.

This idea can be used for extra organisation and storage in a corner used as a dressing area or even next to the wardrobe. How? Because you can use the pockets you've created to store beauty and fashion accessories, like combs, brushes, hair ties, headbands, sunglasses, hats or belts.

Place a standing mirror right next to it and watch it become the perfect corner for any kid or teen who loves getting ready before going out.

4. Pillows for storing clothes

Have you ever thought about using pillows as a way to store clothing and other textiles? Well, it's not a bad idea! Here are some of the textile ideas kids can store in their pillowcases:

  • With the change of seasons, there is some linen that we do not need during certain times of the year. Put them to work as filling for empty pillowcases and you can keep them (almost) in sight until their next use.
  • Our summer duvet can live outside the summer inside a large pillow case. It's also very fluffy!
  • Thicker sweatshirts and jumpers barely wrinkle, so why not use them as a filler?

We hope these original ideas have helped you! But don't leave without first checking out these articles, which will help keep you inspired when it comes to organisation and storage.

We love it when customers use our products in a creative way. Why not try to do something new with them yourself? But do remember, any modifications or changes that you make to IKEA products will prevent them from being resold or used for their original use, thus invalidating IKEA product warranties and your right to return.
