A dinner party with a twist. Organise a tapas competition!

We're huge fans of cooking, but we know that it isn't everyone's cup of tea. Here's an idea for a dinner party that you won't be able to resist because one thing that we definitely all enjoy in Spain is to compete! And you'll have fun along the way.

Invite

Inviting your friends over for a meal is pretty normal, but inviting them over to participate in and judge a cookery competition is something completely different. Think of an original way to invite them to take part. If you can't or don't want to host, maybe suggest the idea so that somebody else can host. Use it as an opportunity to celebrate a special occasion or recent achievement such as a birthday or a promotion, or just use it as an opportunity to spend time together while saving a bit of money.Propose it as something that everybody can take part in, whether they are a dab hand in the kitchen or not – there will be awards for different aspects of the food. And if you're feeling daring enough, suggest a theme: a country, fancy dress, exotic dishes... Anything you like!

What are the rules?

Here you can get as creative as you like, but the main thing is that everybody has to take part, taste the food and cast a vote, which can't be for their own dish of course. If you're a group of 10, each person needs to prepare 10 identical tapas or a dish that can be shared among 10 so that everybody gets to try it. Next, you can discuss the originality of the presentation, the combination of flavours, whether it's a modern or traditional dish, and anything else that comes to mind. This will give anyone who isn't such a dab hand in the kitchen the chance to earn some points. Don't forget to offer a prize to really make things interesting. It could be a challenge such as to host the next get-together, everyone clubbing together to pay for a meal at the winner's favourite spot, or even a getaway. It's completely up to you but rest assured that the competition will be fierce whatever the prize!

The best part... the tasting!

You can all take on the role of judges and cast your votes using a shared document that you display on a TV screen, or go old school and cast a paper ballot. Maybe you could play the role of food critics and write press reviews, whatever takes your fancy! Each guest has creative freedom when it comes to presenting their tapas to the group — think fancy dress, mood music, candles. Whatever it takes to win!Lastly, the best part of all: you get to enjoy a meal with an original twist, in great company and for less money than eating at a restaurant.
