5 tips for creating a relaxing living room

What do you need to relax? Soft throws and cosy cushions? The smell of scented candles? Everything at once? Relaxing at home and spending quality time - alone or with company - is priceless. But to make this happen we need a pleasant and comfortable ambience, tidy and tranquil. That's why we want to give you a hand with these 5 tips for creating a relaxing living room.

Where better than your living room to be happy? So get to work!

1. How to absorb noise with fabrics

One thing that can really put an end to our peace and quiet and try our patience is noise. Noise that can come from both outside and inside our homes. But, did you know that fabrics can help to absorb it and make it less of a nuisance?

Fabrics such as rugs, thick curtains or a combination of nets and curtains can help to isolate noise and, above all, improve the acoustics to leave you with a relaxing living room. There are also so-called "acoustic materials", specially designed for this purpose.

2. Customise your home with relaxing scents

You know how when you get home and you recognise its smell perfectly? Every home, like every person, has a characteristic smell. And that smell can be what you want it to be, as relaxing as you like.

A simple scent can help to radically change your mood. A scent can enliven you, calm you down or even stress you out. In this case, we want to find relaxation and peacefulness. How? Put out a vase with your favourite freshly cut flowers and some scented candles on a dish. Ours last up to 30 hours when lit! Our favourite aromas for relaxing in the living room are: thyme, peony, vanilla and rose.

3. Colours for relaxing in the living room

Dare to choose original pieces, like handwoven rugs or cushion covers with bold prints. All you have to do to get that visually pleasing uniformity is to stick to a particular colour palette. In this case, we went for combining blue with natural tones and contrasting it with metallic and mustard hints.

Remember that if what you want is a completely relaxing living room you should always opt for light shades (white or beige), pastel colours or blues. Avoid red, yellow and orange, which have the opposite effect.

4. Living room lighting to relax you

Lighting is key to achieving an intimate and peaceful ambience. That's why our recommendation for your living room is to dot various light sources around the space, particularly if you use adjustable bulbs. That way you'll be able to choose the lamp that best suits your needs at any given time, as well as the intensity of the light.

Naturally, some little candles will always be the best option to create that relaxing atmosphere we're looking for…

5. No more clutter

Lastly, we should remember another thing that can give us the jitters - clutter! So our last recommendation is for you to keep a daily check on tidiness in the living room. If you take something in or eat in there, tidy it up as soon as you finish, clean the surfaces, put the cushions back in place…

And if you find that hard, at least get yourself a cupboard, some storage or a dresser with doors. That way, in the worst case scenario, everything can go inside and you won't see the chaos! On this subject, we suggest that you don't miss:

We love it when customers use our products in a creative way. Why not try to do something new with them yourself? But do remember, any modifications or changes that you make to IKEA products will prevent them from being resold or used for their original use, thus invalidating IKEA product warranties and your right to return.
