Best value!!MCL3It baffles me that this unit has less than a five star rating. I think it’s one of the greatest purchases I’ve made, and it’s certainly a GREAT value. Putting it together took a bit of space and time and elbow grease and sweat, but it was completely uncomplicated and exactly what I expected. Best of all, this unit could not possibly look better in my room. I got it for the price but I’d get it again just because I love the look so much. It’s sturdy, I’ve had it for at least a year and a half and it has held up fantastically, and I live in CA where we have a lot of earthquakes but it seems very secure. And it stores so much! If I could ask anything more of it, I might ask for one or two additional shelves just to give more options, but seriously, I don’t have a complaint in the world about this thing. I think it’s GREAT.5

Newer versions are a different depth than oldEkwoodI have an old version of this purchased 9 years ago. I wanted to add 2 new shelves. The new shelves are a full inch shallower than the old ones. I love the shelves but new parts are not interchangeable anymore which is super disappointing since it's sold under the same name.2
Flexible shelvingFerd7The kit is easy to assemble. No missing parts. I used it as a shelf unit on top of my work bench-adjusting the top was key to everything fitting. The back bracket is useful if it is free-standing-mine is wedged between the workbench and ceiling-so it should not budge. More adjustable holes along the top and bottom would be helpful5
I couldn't be more pleasedexcellentthingsHonestly, I'm so surprised to see what a poor overall rating this product has received! Assembling it definitely challenged my physical strength, but I have arthritis and am as a result very weak, so expected nothing less. Ultimately, no bumps in the road; it wasn't complicated at all, just required perseverance. I think the unit is absolutely gorgeous, it's sturdy as heck, and the price absolutely cannot be beat. I don't have a complaint in the world . . . except that my bedroom isn't large enough to accommodate a second one! Seriously. I try to get used items most of the time, but this shelving unit is truly a worthwhile exception to that rule.5
Be careful! Hejne items are not all the samegary28You'd think that if you tried to buy a 4 section that was 19 deep and they were out of it and then you tried to buy a 3 section that was 19 deep...and they were out of that, that when you went to a product with the exact same name in a 2 section that it would be the SAME thing. You know, same name, same style. So since they had nothing that I wanted I compromised to get something I could use in my studio and when it arrives it's a much shallower shelf. They call the depth 12 1/4 but the shelf is exactly 11 deep. Which is just about useless. NO. So this is going back. And I've wasted about a week of my time.1

Story

Sturdy storage from solid wood

At IKEA, we work hard to keep prices down. One way is reducing the number of production steps. This helped making HEJNE shelves an affordable buy. As much of the production as possible is done right where the timber is felled. But keeping prices low is one thing. The real trick is to be sustainably minded, too. In the case of HEJNE, it was easy. What helps make the shelves more affordable, also makes them more sustainable.

The key is to use more parts of each tree and to cut transportation costs by producing where the tree is sourced.

Sourced from sustainable forests

"The first part is harvesting the timber from responsibly managed forests, and then it’s on to the sawmill," says Jesper Gunnerling who helped source the wood. The outer sections of the log are what we use to make HEJNE. The price for these parts is lower, without losing the benefits of solid wood. "There's no difference at all in strength," Jesper says. "But furniture makers don't always use this type of wood because it has these natural markings in the timber where branches have come out from the trunk."

Strong and straightforward storage

Solid timber is so strong that each HEJNE unit can be used to store heavy loads, like a garage worth of tools. There's no paint or extra fittings, just practical and strong solid wood shelves to make sturdy, unpretentious storage, ready for years of service around the home. That’s likeable, don’t you think?

What is solid wood?

Solid wood is one of our favorite materials and is part of our Scandinavian heritage. It is also a timeless material with many uses. Regardless of the tree species, it is durable, beautiful and renewable. We strive to use this raw material as smartly and efficiently as possible to avoid waste – and we also invest in facilities and logistics so that we can increase the use of recycled wood.
