Durable, good value for moneyPritamGood simple product that feels sturdy and durable.4
Great for plants on the deckReginaI purchased this to use as shelving to hold outdoor plants.5
FunctionalJulesThe Hyllis is and does what is expected. It’s a nice little shelving unit. It’s durability in outside conditions is yet to be seen. Once put together, it feels secure and functional. However, putting it together is awkward; the feet don’t quite stay on nor do the legs align properly to the screw holes. Ultimately, I used a drill for additional force to purposefully bend the metal legs into position as I put in the screws. It’s functional but what is a simple item to put together was more of a nuisance than other, more difficult IKEA products I’ve assembled.3

Great for PlantsSusan C.Using this shelving for plants in a window nook. Would be easy to spray paint if you don't like the industrial look finish.5
Hyllis..4 metal shelvingANN M.I love the price that made it affordable and I saw the assembled model. My problems were when assembling the shelves, the screwnuts didn't line up properly with the holes and my phillips driver couldn't turn them properly. Therefore the shelves are rather wobbly but later, I will attempt to tighten them with a different phillips driver.4

Nice!!!!CoreyThis shelf is the smaller version of one i already have. It fits nicely in a corner. I do kinda wish there was another set of holes so the shelves could be put at different levels. For an Ikea item this was bad to put together. We spray painted it black and it looks really nice.4
sturdyLIYENIt's lite but very sturdy, and the price is definitely attractive!5

HYLLIS creates room for life on the balcony

Some of us live smaller than we’d like. It often means a constant hunt for more space. So why not try and use the space we have in smarter ways? This was something our product developers wanted to help out with when they created a small version of HYLLIS – a shelf that fits almost anywhere – and can be used if you want to grow your own herbs and small plants.

Philip Dilé, one of the members in the development team behind HYLLIS, live in an apartment with balcony in southern Sweden. “My balcony is filled with stuff. I’d like to use it for something other than storage, and I think many of our customers feel the same way.”

Cover from the elements

To shield our balconies from weather, wind and exhaust fumes, it usually isn’t enough with the protection from the neighbor above. That’s why the team decided to create a cover for HYLLIS. They made it transparent and added ventilation holes. It makes it possible to use the cover and the shelf as a greenhouse.

Become a balcony farmer

“I grow herbs myself. It saves money and it’s fun to see life sprout on your own balcony. I think people who live in cities should be able to grow small plants and herbs too, even if they don’t have access to a garden,” says Philip. With HYLLIS shelf and cover they can do it in a small scale and use the balcony for more things than storing – a greener life and a smarter use of space at home.

What is steel?

Steel has unique characteristics when it is stretched and shaped since it remains strong. It provides strength to everything from skyscrapers and cars to bed frames and outdoor furniture.
