Farmhouse style

Laid back and rustic, the farmhouse style's look and feel is both easy going and nostalgic. Drawing on the simplicity and charm of rural living, it blends painted wood panelling and exposed brick with pastel hues – all softened with cotton and linen textiles in gingham and ticking stripes. Also known as shaker style, these vintage-inspired spaces invite you to ease into mastering the craft of relaxation.

Farmhouse furniture – rustic, timeless, and simple

Natural grain wood plays a key role in farmhouse-style furniture – its nod to shaker style showing up in turned legs and curved lines. Upholstery is neutral or pastel, in washed greens, pinks, yellows, and blues, while curtains are light and sheer, and rugs are flatwoven and layered over large-plank wood flooring. It’s naturally simple.

Farmhouse style accessories – naturally warm and inviting

It’s in farmhouse style accessories that nature is most evident – whether it's hung dried flowers, windowsills filled with plants, smaller woven baskets, or patterned decorative wall art. Collections and treasures foraged from nature are also key, show them off in open shelving and display hutches and invite some conversation.

Farmhouse living room – light, easy, and breezy

Take a light touch to the living room, with farmhouse style. Vintage-style furniture finds easy company with rattan baskets and warm-hued blonde wood. Cotton and linen curtains drape across windows, both softening the light and letting it flood the space, while pastels tie it all together – with well-placed accents in sunflower yellow or cherry red. Freshening things up is as simple as gathering grasses and reeds for fuss-free arrangements in glass jars and bottles.

Farmhouse bedroom – calm and cozy

White, cream, warm grey – these are the light neutrals found in farmhouse bedrooms. As their centrepiece, the bed combines graphic black cast iron with crisp white bedding and cushions in natural linens and bold monochrome ticking stripes. Walls are minimally dressed – think a single feature wall hanging and/or smaller gallery picture collection. In the farmhouse bedroom, less is more.

Farmhouse bathroom – crisp and clean

Nature is a big feature in the farmhouse bathroom, together with clear-cut or fluted glass, sanitary ware, and bathroom textiles in crisp white. Taken together, it all feels fresh and clean.

Farmhouse kitchen – fresh yet functional

In the farmhouse kitchen, the light woods of this style appear as accents in functional essentials such as cooking spoons, chopping boards, and washing-up brushes. These sit against light and simple backdrops, freshened with growing herbs and green plants and softened with raw linens, both plain and striped.
