How can I remove label residue from my product?
Here are some suggestions on how to remove sticker residue from IKEA products.
Sticker residue can be removed in several different ways. Select the method that you feel would cause the least amount of damage to the surface of your product.
- WD-40: Spray a bit of WD-40 on the residue. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe it away. Be careful as WD-40 is highly flammable and can also damage the surface finish of a product, such as lacquer or melamine.
- Rubbing alcohol or Vodka: Dab some rubbing alcohol or vodka on a cloth and apply it to the residue. Let it sit for a few minutes before wiping it away.
- Hair dryer: Use a hair dryer to heat the adhesive. The heat will soften the glue making it easier to peel off.
- Peanut butter: Spread a small amount of peanut butter over the residue and let it sit for a few minutes. The oils in the peanut butter can help break down the adhesive.
- Soap and water: You can soak the product in soap and hot water solution. Then try to scrape the residue off with the dull edge of a knife.
- Acetone: Acetone will often successfully dissolve adhesives. As with WD-40, be careful as they can also remove the surface finish of a product, such as lacquer or melamine.
- White vinegar: Soak a paper towel in white vinegar and place it over the residue for about 5 minutes. The vinegar will help dissolve the adhesive.
- Scotch tape: The sticky side of a piece of tape can be used to pull the residue off the surface of a product.
- Mineral or baby oil: Treat the area with mineral or baby oil. After a few moments, wipe away the oil using a clean cloth. If the sticker residue is still present, use a pencil eraser to rub off the remaining sticker residue.
- Ask your local hardware store to recommend a commercial adhesive-removing product that is non-toxic. Orange oil, for example, is very effective at removing the gummy residue from stickers.
