Do any of your products contain BPA?
The safety and security of everyone who comes in contact with our products is of the utmost importance to IKEA. All of our products are tested to meet the strictest global standards on product safety and none of our children nor food storage products contain BPA.
BPA is a chemical used as an ingredient when creating polycarbonate (PC) plastic and other polymeric mixtures, such as epoxy powder coatings. Its properties led to industrial use in baby bottles, for example, as they are often transparent and unbreakable.
Scientific studies have found BPA to cause reproductive harm. The main exposure of BPA is migration from PC plastics into food and water.
In 2009 IKEA took the precautionary decision to phase out PC plastic in children’s (0-7 years) products, and again in 2012 for food contact products, due to the risk of PC plastic containing BPA. BPA is used in production of some coatings, but only in applications where there is a minimum risk of exposure for the customer.
No. The material as such is not harmful but heating may release emissions that are unwanted. Therefore IKEA has taken the decision to phase out this material in products where one of the functions is heating, e.g. food-contact articles.
