Does IKEA use dangerous chemicals in the production of its items?
IKEA does not and has never used banned substances in the production of our items.
The health and safety of our customers and everyone who comes into contact with our products is a top priority for us. IKEA products are free of banned substances and all materials used in our products are within the legal requirements of the countries where we sell our products.
IKEA has detailed regulations on the use of chemicals and other substances in the manufacturing process.
Lead, cadmium or their compounds are not allowed to be added to IKEA products.
We apply the strictest legislation for formaldehyde emissions in our products sold worldwide. Fabrics are covered under the Finnish standard whereas wood products must adhere to the California standard which states that total emissions from a wood-based product cannot exceed 0.05 ppm.
All paints and lacquers applied to IKEA products are formaldehyde-free.
IKEA International made a voluntary decision to abstain from the use of brominated flame retardants and antimony compounds in 1998. Today all textiles, mattresses and upholstered furniture sold by IKEA stores are free of Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and antimony compounds.
