Creating safe places to call home
At IKEA, we believe that everyone deserves a place to call home. A home that is safe, stable, secure and meets their needs – especially children.
In Australia, two in five children have experienced domestic violence, and it is the leading cause of homelessness for women and children. Yet children are not considered victim-survivors in their own right. This means their voices go unheard in policy, funding and services.
Demonstrating the importance of listening to children, IKEA and Save the Children Australia are working with children as co-creators to redesign emergency refuges to feel more like a home for families escaping violence.

A safe home should not be a dream
'Safe Space' is an immersive installation reflecting the needs, desires and imaginations of children who have experienced living in an unsafe home, brought to life by IKEA designers. Customers are invited to explore Safe Space in most IKEA stores until 5 October 2025.

Standing together for children
IKEA is proud to join Act for Children, an alliance of advocates and experts urging the Australian government to make the safety and well-being of children a national priority by:
- Appointing a Cabinet Minister for Children – in the same way we have for women, disabilities, health and housing.
- Make child wellbeing a standing priority of the National Cabinet
- Develop and implement a National Plan for Child Wellbeing
- Enshrine children’s rights in law through a National Children’s Act
We all deserve a place to call home
IKEA is working with Save the Children Australia to create more safe places to call home. This includes financial assistance for housing and specialist support services, along with design expertise and home furnishings for different types of refuge accommodation.
To help support more women and children escaping violence, IKEA customers can now choose to add a small donation at the store checkout with the purchase of a FRAKTA bag.
All funds raised will help provide rental assistance, supporting families to start again in a safe place to call home.
