IKEA Australia continues its 80 years of celebration with the second drop of the Nytillverkad collection

Range news3 October 2023
IKEA continues to celebrate 80 years of its rich design heritage by revitalising some of its most iconic products with the Nytillverkad range, available across Australia from October 2023

As IKEA continues its celebration of its 80th anniversary, it reintroduces selected product favorites from the archive. The Nytillverkad collection connects the iconic designs of the past with the dreams and needs of the present and future Aussies.

Johan Ejdemo, Global Design Manager at IKEA of Sweden says, “At IKEA, we're proud of our heritage and want to celebrate it by bringing back some of our most iconic designs while integrating the latest technology and materials. The Nytillverkad collection blends classic designs with modern standards, and it is all about simplicity, functionality, bold expression, and playfulness – just like IKEA!”

A colourful tribute to the ‘70s and ‘80s

From its eye-popping hot orange colour to the vibrant fabrics and bold shapes, the October release of the Nytillverkad collection pays tribute to the energetic and daring spirit of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s

This launch encourages self-expression through its bold colours and eye-catching sculptural designs. It is a perfect selection of furniture and accessories for everyone who wants to make a statement or just add subtle touches of vibrancy to their home. “I wanted the products to stand on their own, like sculptures that stand out in any room,” says Karin Gustavsson, Range Identity Leader at IKEA of Sweden, and the creative leader behind the Nytillverkad collection.

Standout pieces in the second drop of the collection include the SKÅLBODA armchair and the JÄRLÅSA side table. The JÄRLÅSA side table on castors, introduced in the IKEA catalogue in 1984 as HOFF, is a perfect retro book stand or bar cart, and folds flat to be stored away. The inspiration for the SKÅLBODA armchair is the JÄRPEN armchair designed by Niels Gammelgaard for IKEA in the early '80s. With its innovative design featuring larger holes to reduce material, the JÄRPEN chair offered a great comfort and style at a very affordable price, making it popular among teenagers.

“If the design is good and the next generation still find it trendy, then we have succeeded. I think we have succeeded with this chair. And I’m very proud, forty years later,” says Niels Gammelgaard, designer.

The Nytillverkad collection also reintroduces SVEDJENÄVA, a bold and attention-grabbing paw-like pattern, and the iconic NICKFIBBLA pattern in cushion covers and pre-cut fabric in vibrant orange and white stripes.

The second drop of the Nytillverkad collection will be available at IKEA Australia in store and online, starting 1 October 2023.
