When do I need to use filler pieces when installing my IKEA Kitchen?

Filler pieces are used at the end of cabinets that are against a wall in order to create clearance for doors and drawers to open with ease. Filler pieces are also used to cover any gaps between two kitchen cabinets.

You will need to use a filler piece whenever there is a gap between the wall or another cabinet. The filler piece will fill the hole and create a finished look for your kitchen. All filler pieces are cut by you from a cover panel.

  • Minimum filer for a cabinet with drawers beside a wall: 1"
  • Minimum filler for a cabinet with door beside a wall: 2" or more with larger handles.
  • Minimum filler for a refridgerator door beside a wall: 4"

These spaces are required for the door to open properly and not hit the wall with the handle. Secondly, smaller than recommend distances can cause the door to not fully open. This is an issue for a cabinet or refridgerator with internal drawers. For cabinets with drawers, be aware of any door frames that may prevent the drawer from fully opening.

You can always have a bigger filler piece in between a wall and the cabinets. This would depend on need and athsethics of your design, in which a kitchen coworker can assist you.
