From Newcomer to Leader

Originally from western Ukraine, Iryna arrived in Australia in 2022 with her mother after the outbreak of war, starting a new chapter far from home.

After arriving in Sydney, Iryna worked in housekeeping roles while also attending TAFE to improve her English. Although she could understand the language, speaking confidently was a barrier, and adjusting to life in a new country was not easy.

In 2023 Iryna joined IKEA as a Sales Co-worker at IKEA Tempe. From her first day, she felt welcomed and supported, helping her quickly gain confidence despite language barriers. ‘It felt like a new family. Everyone supported me and helped me learn step by step.’

Since joining, Iryna has grown quickly, moving into a Customer Service Coordinator role in her first year. Her development has been recognised through Co-worker of the Month and Co-worker of the Year awards.

‘I wanted to challenge myself and try something new. Now I feel stronger and more confident.’

Iryna has also contributed beyond her store, supporting the opening of a new IKEA store in New Zealand, an experience she describes as a highlight of her journey.

Today, she is known for bringing positivity and connection to her team, using her ability to speak multiple languages to support customers and co-workers alike. ‘When people support you and believe in you, that’s when you grow.’

For Iryna, IKEA represents opportunity and a fresh start for both herself and her family.‘ My family is so proud of how far I’ve come. This is just the beginning for me.’
