Entrepreneurially minded

With a background in computer science and experience in retail management, Iraqi-born Atheer was eager to work in Australia but faced challenges having his overseas experience recognised. 

In 2024, he joined IKEA through the Refugee Workforce Inclusion program, starting in Customer Fulfilment at the IKEA Rhodes store. From day one, he felt welcomed and supported by his team, helping him quickly build confidence.

Around eight months later, Atheer progressed into a Coordinator role, demonstrating how people can grow and develop when given the opportunity. At IKEA, it’s about who our people are and what they bring - their skills, experience and values - not where they come from.

‘I’m very proud to be a coordinator here. I’ve taken my experience and used it to grow. Working at IKEA means a new future for me and my family. I want to keep developing and see how far I can go.’

For Atheer, growth is also about mindset. He encourages all co-workers to stay curious and keep learning. ‘If you don’t know something, just ask. Be curious and never be afraid to ask a question. That’s how you build your confidence and keep moving forward.’
