The ultimate small space living room

Creating a relaxing living room can be pretty easy if you’ve got an amazing space to work with. But what happens when you’ve got limited space to work with? We helped a family from Monash, ACT, create a fantastic everyday living room in an unconventional space.

Inspiration starts here

Meet Tonia and Jeremy. Along with their daughter Anna and new puppy Toffee, the young family love spending time together and use their living room for everything from guitar practice to hosting a book club. One thing that’s proved difficult though is the room’s small size and awkward shape.

“We’ve tried quite a few different configurations over the years to try and make it a comfortable space,” Tonia says. “One of the things we’re really hoping with the makeover is to make the space more flexible.”

If you have a small living room it can be all too easy for possessions to take over. Our advice is to conquer the clutter with good storage that lets you easily organise your things. The flexible BESTÅ series works with a range of internal organisers perfect for everything from DVD’s to extra blankets.

To fit the family’s brief for a flexible living room we worked with adaptable furniture that can be moved easily depending on the situation. By combining a comfy chair with a pouffe you can create a super cosy spot for one, or move them around to make two seats for when guests come over.

We divided this room into multiple activity zones for the family - a cosy reading nook, storage areas and a communal sofa for the family to enjoy hanging out together. Rugs are perfect for marking out each area and joining each zone so that the whole room feels connected.

“We’ve got a great space to come together as a family, it can be a lounge room that we can entertain in.”
