A cool, colourful new look for your workspace

Darcel Disappoints, the witty alter-ego of designer Craig Redman, is the star of new IKEA collaboration, FÖRNYAD. With stationery, desks, stools, rugs and more it has everything you need to update your study.

A collection for the curious

FÖRNYAD is a new collection from IKEA, in collaboration with cartoonist Craig Redman and Sarah Andelman, Creative Director of the now-closed, Parisian concept store colette. Craig’s character Darcel Disappoints is the inspiration for 22 fashion-led products. “Darcel is made-up of basic shapes which are repeated throughout the collection, accented with pops of colette blue,” says Craig.

The FÖRNYAD collection is straight-up fun. Using colour and simple forms, it celebrates fun and design coming together in a joyful way.

colette presented a back to school “must have” collection every year. For this collaboration, the store’s creative director Sarah introduced us to Craig and his alter-ego Darcel – a favourite with the design-interested.

Playing with pattern

FÖRNYAD means ‘renewed’ and the collection is designed to add optimism to any situation. Sarah explains the inspiration for the print that features on many of the pieces in the collection: “It’s based on Tuileries, the park close to where the colette store was in Paris. It’s a beautiful space between The Louvre and Place de la Concorde, with lots of statues, flowers and candy floss for kids.”

I’m made-up of basic shapes – an egg, one eye, a monocle – and these are repeated throughout the collection, accented with pops of colette blue.

Flat-packed design

“Have you ever seen a team of people try to figure out how to flat pack a product?” asks Darcel. “It’s fascinating. I didn’t put too much emphasis on it when I initially designed the FÖRNYAD lamp, but IKEA quickly brought it up and I loved the challenge of deconstructing my designs with this in mind.”

All in the detail

Every home needs a little pick me up, and the collection has fun accessories big and small to update your home and office. There’s even Darcel-adorned washi tape. “Over the course of designing the collection I thought, ‘how do I incorporate my aesthetic into peoples’ homes in both a fun way as well as something more discrete?’” Darcel explains.

FÖRNYAD is perfect for your new apartment or heading to college, but these items can have lots of different lives, in different rooms, with different uses.
