An Update on Our Response to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Update: Effective 3/28/20, IKEA stores will no longer process Click & Collect orders for pick-up in our locations.

IKEA to temporarily close all U.S. stores  

Today, IKEA Retail U.S. will temporarily close all 50 store locations across the U.S. and the IKEA Planning Studio in Manhattan. This decision was taken by IKEA leadership as a pre-cautionary measure due to the rapidly evolving novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). 

IKEA U.S will continue to offer online shopping with the convenience of home delivery or Click & Collect (in select locations). Please see details around our services here, or check availability of Click & Collect at your local store here.

“Unprecedented times call for unprecedented measures. This is the most responsible way IKEA can continue to care for our co-workers and our customers in a manner that is healthy and safe,” said Javier Quiñones, IKEA Retail U.S. President. “We are taking our role in containing this epidemic seriously, and we recognize the positive impact our actions could have on making life better for the millions of people who have been impacted by this crisis.”

The IKEA locations will remain closed to the public for shopping, while remaining operational to fulfill online orders and online order pick up (Click & Collect). The company has put in place additional measures to ensure the work environment is clean and sanitized and that co-workers are working at a safe social distance.

Co-workers are at the heart of the IKEA business, and the retailer is committed to caring for its 18,000 co-workers in the best possible way. IKEA will continue to support co-workers through its comprehensive benefits package and paid leave policy. All non-essential co-worker travel and large group meetings have been cancelled. IKEA will assess all measures on a regular base.

On March 16, IKEA announced in a message to customers that it was closing many stores or reducing hours at the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and local authorities. Additionally, the company preemptively closed all Småland play areas, IKEA restaurants and bistros and cancelled all in-store events and workshops in the U.S. 

Globally, to date, IKEA has announced temporary closures in heavily impacted countries including Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain and Switzerland. With the situation across China now slowly improving, IKEA stores in China are being reopened gradually.

An Open-Letter to Our Co-Workers from IKEA U.S. Javier Quiñones

Dear co-worker,

Over the last few weeks, our life at IKEA Retail US has completely shifted. We have seen so many acts of heroism around the world—both big and small. Today, I want to extend a massive thanks to the many co-workers throughout our organization who have been keeping our business operational during this time. I’ve seen the comments and videos of you embracing new ways of working and “kraftsamla,” while taking care of each other and our customers. Each of you is putting our values into action and demonstrating the true spirit of togetherness that we aim to live by. You are the key to securing our future, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

We have all been challenged as leaders, businesses, and individuals to figure out how to do our part. It is important for you to understand that the decisions we have taken at IKEA have been driven by our commitment to people. Every action we are taking is to care for our many co-workers—those who are able to continue to work and those who cannot. It is important for each and every one of us to understand that the decision to continue to operate our ecommerce business as long as we can is not about making a profit. It is about protecting our people and their livelihoods in this time of uncertainty.  In these times, ecommerce is critical for the longevity of our business, and we need to protect the business, so that we can continue protecting our co-workers.

Your health and well-being continue to be and will always be our priority. We have been in touch with the CDC, local governments, and many other retailers to learn and take guidance on our actions. We will continue to ensure the units are clean and sanitized, in addition to creating space for you to work at a safe social distance. We will make sure you have all the supplies you need including sanitizer, gloves and masks, where needed. And of course, we will make sure you continue to receive free meals and bottled water for your shifts.

Our stores have always been the centerpiece of the IKEA business, but right now, ecommerce is important for many reasons. We have seen that this is one of the many ways we can do our part to help the many people right now who need to set up home workstations and home-school environments. We are the experts of life at home, and we are happy to be able to help make life better for the many people during this difficult time.

In closing, I want to come back to the power of togetherness. We’ve seen it work time and time again and this will be no exception. I encourage you to keep talking and keep sharing because we are listening. We are constantly evaluating our actions to ensure we are living up to the promises that we have made both to you and our customers. We have a fantastic future ahead of us. One day we will all look back in awe of what we were able to accomplish... together.
