The right mattres matters

Finding the right comfort is key to waking up refreshed. There needs to be a precise balance between comfort and support to ensure good quality sleep.

The right mattress allows your heavier body parts, like shoulders and hips, to sink in just enough, while actively supporting your waist and lower back.

This closes any gaps between your body and the mattress, keeping your spine naturally straight and allowing your muscles to fully relax. That's the feeling you're looking for.

Foam & memory foam mattrasses

Foam mattresses spread your body weight more evenly than spring mattresses and promote better blood circulation.

Qualities: Soft, resilient, and made without coils.

Spring mattresses

Spring mattresses use coils to distribute your weight, providing optimal support for the body and eliminating excessive stress.

Qualities: Cooler and more breathable.

Understanding your sleeping style

Everybody has a different way of sleeping. The following factors play a big part in determining what mattress will suit you best.

Sleeping position
What position you prefer to sleep in, determines what kind of mattress would best suit you. Here's a quick overview:

  • Back sleeper: A mattress without comfort zones* to give even support.
  • Stomach sleeper: A firm mattress that helps the spine maintain its natural alignment.
  • Side sleeper: A mattress with comfort zones to let hips and shoulders sink in.

Body weight
As a rule of thumb, the heavier a person is, the firmer their mattress needs to be.

Body shape
Somebody with wider shoulders or hips would benefit from a mattress with comfort zones. Otherwise, any kind of mattress would work.

*Comfort zones give each part of your body the support it needs—softer around heavier joints and firmer against the neck and back.

Tips for couples

One smart solution is to use two single mattresses with different firmness levels in one bed frame, topped with one shared mattress topper. That way, each of you gets the support you need, while the topper creates a smooth, unified sleeping surface.

Foam mattresses are great options if one of you moves a lot at night, since they absorb movement and help reduce how much you feel each other’s tossing and turning.

Mattresses that are made to last

For more than 50 years, IKEA engineers have been studying sleep and testing mattresses in our test labs in Älmhult, Sweden.

In the Test Lab, every mattress – regardless of price – goes through the same rigorous test programme. You can feel confident your new mattress is built to last. Here’s how we know:

The test: We simulate a 140 kg (308 lb) person rolling around in bed 50,000 times.

What we measure: We use pressure gauges to check that the springs, frames, and fillings meet our highest standards for strength and durability.

The result: Only mattresses that prove they can stand up to years of use make it to our stores, and are backed by a 10-year guarantee.
