Bad to WorseMThis deserves a zero stars rating for quality and customer service. The thing just falls apart. I can't even use it. Customer service was no help. So disappointed!!!!!!! Not worth it! If the store was not almost a 4 hr drive one way I would be returning this for a refund.
GarbageNicoleI ordered one and it came damaged. All bent and paint chipping off. It’s not like the price was cheap. Then I called thinking maybe they’d just send a replacement, but you have to schedule a pick up, can’t even ship it back. Asked if I wanted to exchange. Absolutely not. I guess I’ll just have to pay for a more expensive Bisley.
Genuinely Bad DesignEvaThe materials are fine, the aesthetic is fine, the design is AWFUL. The drawers won't fully stay upright because the completed unit doesn't fit together properly. Literally going to have to "repair" this new item just to make it as functional as advertised. Was disappointed with this one.
Complete PoSPaulHeld together with push in tabs. Try to move it and it comes apart. What a waste of money. The gentleman who wrote the review on 6/25 was dead on with his review. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!
It would have been a better use of time to light 80 dollars on fireCaresaIf you’re looking for a humbling reminder that you are not, in fact, good at building furniture—or that time is a non-refundable resource—look no further than the IKEA Helmer.
This little metal cabinet lures you in with promises of clean design and “easy organization.” What it delivers is a spiritual test of patience, sanity, and hand strength. The instructions are a cryptic series of vague diagrams that seem to mock you as you go. There are no words, only symbols—and none of them helpful.
The drawers? Flimsy. The frame? Wobbly. The assembly? Somewhere between a logic puzzle and a form of light psychological warfare. I now understand why some people become minimalists: they probably tried building a Helmer and gave up on belongings entirely.
Save yourself the trouble. Burn the $80, make s’mores, and enjoy an evening free of allen wrenches and regret.
junkChristiwont stay together, 100% would never buy again
SO disappointed, hard to believe its ikea!
What a downgrade!BradleyThese are absolute garbage compared to the old welded version, I have one that's held up since the early 2000's. This is not that old workhorse. This feels like it's going to crumple into itself if I so much as put a notebook in it.
Hey Ikea bring back the old version so I can crush this new one in my hands like a soda can and throw it in the recycling where it belongs
Worst Ikea item. Actual trashAndrewI've owned several of the old helmer drawer units. They lasted years. I didn't even read the reviews before ordering a new one. Somehow this new version is twice the price and is absolute, literal garbage. Garbage, like I'm putting it in the trash immediately. The metal is now paper thin and requires bending it all into place to make it stay together. There are zero welds, and the only screws are for the casters. The entire construction is based on bending tiny metal tabs. This of course makes everything super wobbly. The top just kinda lays on top. The drawers are one piece that you fold together like origami, then just rest on metal slots. Want to open a drawer? well you have to use your other hand to stabilize the whole thing so it doesn't collapse/implode. It's like a cardboard prop in a elementary school play. It is not furniture. It is not functional.
Very useful ScottIt went together perfectly.
Very easy to assemble. I plan on buying more of these.
Just disappointedAnonymous reviewerMy dad ordered one of these based on my old version - had no idea they've gone to assembly with this. The old one I have came assembled, the sheets of metal were welded. The consumer just had to screw on the casters and handles. It's held up for 20 years. These new ones don't seem worth it.
Helmer drawer unitBarbaraLove it, I now have 5 of them for all my embroidery thread.
It is good.RaymondIt is good.
Works well, sturdyMurielLooks good, metal so sturdy. Fits well under his desk.
Biggest Scam for PriceAnonymousI absolutely cannot believe I paid 86 dollars for this piece of junk! The little metal bars the drawers slide into literally fall out EVERY SINGLE time I pull the drawer! This thing is super annoying when you use the cabinet for work and have to constantly fix the drawers bc the piece keeps falling off then it’s like the domino effect and more parts keep falling off. It’s a disastrous time consuming experience to have this in the office space if you plan on frequently opening the drawers. ZERO stars if I could
Helmet Unit Doesn't Stay TogetherPatriciaI wouldn't advise anyone to buy this product. I have an older model that I still have and works great, but this newer model has been a pain in the neck! The pieces off of which the drawers hang fall out all the time. The metal prongs on each end which are supposed to hook into place are not nearly long enough to remain sturdy or stable. Also, I've had to duct tape the entire piece together because the back and or sides will fall off. This is an example of taking what used to be a reliable unit and making it so cheap to maintain the price point that the unit is no longer functional. I've had it 7 months and I'm tossing it tomorrow. And, hey Ikea, you've also lost a customer!
Terrible Overpriced PurchaseEnidI purchase this item for my home office. The size was good and fit well next to my desk. However,
while this item looks good it is poorly made. Very and I mean very cheap material and didn't last long at all. The draws would not close right after a week of use. It could not handle heavy items and not even light items. I just threw it out. It was a waste of money. I am very disappointed with this over priced item. I totally regret buying this item and I suggest you do not even think about purchasing it.
Ok with a few flawsSarahThis is an alright unit once it is put together. However, there are a few flaws with the design. The drawers are flat pieces that have to be folded to but put together. This means the drawers are not solid, and have holes on either side where the metal is folded. The folded metal is then held together by folding tabs on the front and back shelf pieces. Unless you are extremely careful, you will almost definitely stab the front piece of the drawer while folding the tabs down (if you use a screwdriver, as suggested), ruining the look of the unit before you even get to use it.
Extremely Low QualityScottThe entire assembly is made by pushing tabs and bending the metal sheets. This obviously means the entire unit is made from weak, flimsy stamped metal. This isn't worth more than 20 dollars, let alone 80
Does the jobAdrianaBased on previous reviews, I thought this product was going to be very frustrating to put together. I preemptively saved a YouTube tutorial to ease this process and it took me 30-40 mins to build. The material it's made of leaves a lot to be desired... I thought it would be a bit sturdier. Some of the corners of the drawers and the unit itself came dented and/or chipped. IMO, I think it's fine for the price, color and what I'm using it for.
Overpriced Flimsy Drawer UnitHaipingI bought 2 units from two years ago and needed a matching third unit so order the same thing. It was only half this price like $35 from 2 years ago. IKEA marked up the price big time without changing anything. The quality is really nothing like worth $40 or more. Let alone double the price. Don’t waste your money. At least don’t buy it without deep discount.
