We want to have a positive impact on the planet. That is why by 2030, we want all materials in our products to be recycled or renewable, and sourced in responsible ways.

By using particle board with a slice of wood as top layer instead of only solid wood in this product, we use less wood per product. That way, we take better care of resources.

By using sawmill leftovers and scrap wood in the particle board in this product, we make use of whole trees and not only the trunks. That way, we take better care of resources.

Love it.DeniseReally happy with this desk. Very easy to put together.5
Good, solid deskANGELAWe like the desk a lot. Just what we needed to telework and support two monitors and a laptop. Only drawback: the directions were a bit difficult to follow and some paint from the bottom support had paint drippings in the screw holes, so it made threading the screw very difficult. I would encourage you to dry fit the screws in the hole BEFORE putting it together. We had to disassemble a good portion of the desk to chip away the drips of paint to get a couple important screws in.5

PerfectJann W.This is the 3rd desk I purchased since we started working from home in March of 2019. Due to limitations, had to setup up my office in my bedroom. Every desk I found was about 42 wide and left very little functional space for a 27 inch monitor, a small wifi keyboard, while still needing space for my actual non computer work. in addition, had to butt it up to a window wall which made me feel locked in and closed up my beautiful room. This desk, which we setup last night, is not only amazingly functional but also slips right into the feel of the room and now opens it all back up. I have never been so happy! Work is extremely important to me but so is my decor. The search has ended :-). It is made extremely well and the surface looks better than expected. I purchased the black on black wood finish.5

Great fitLasknitsHaving worked from my dining room table since mid-March and playing on my personal computer in the evening, I decided that the small desk that I got in college was way too small and started looking for an upgrade. Bekant was on the top of my list, but IKEA’s website wouldn’t let me order for pickup from my local store. (Why wait 6-8 weeks for delivery and pay for the privilege, when the store is 20 minutes away.). When they finally re-opened I zipped over, checked out the display for fit and scooped up the last one available in store. All my tech fits on the surface and I could pass on a couple of extra pieces of furniture to someone else.5
Desk for home officeAnonymous reviewerBought this desk just over a month ago. Needed something for home office. I like the scale and the look. Fits well in office. Ample working space and sturdy. Love the adjustability to get proper height. Takes a bit of measuring to get height adjusted but still very workable.5
SeanzGreat size, exactly what I needed and I love the blue color with the white legs.5
Wanted to love itrjrkcI started a new work-from-home position and planned to create a make-shift office under the stairs. I liked the cut out nook and it was very easy to put together however it was too big for the space.4

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA, we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

What is particleboard?

Particleboard is made from recycled wood and sawmill waste – so wood pieces with the wrong shade, woodchips and sawdust become a valuable resource instead of being discarded. We use boards for things like bookcases, bed frames, sofas and kitchen frames. To protect from wear and moisture, we apply varnish, veneer or foil that adds to the furniture's look. The day your sofa or bed needs replacing, the material in the particleboard can be recycled into something entirely new.
