Sometimes the brightest ideas start overhead. A chandelier light naturally draws attention upward, helping define a dining area, anchor a living room or create a memorable first impression in an entryway.
Our hanging light fixtures are designed for spaces big and small, with options suited to different room layouts, ceiling heights and needs. Pair yours with LED light bulbs for long-lasting, energy-efficient illumination during everyday moments and special occasions.
What is the difference between a chandelier and a pendant light?
Chandeliers and pendant lights are both hanging light fixtures, but they serve slightly different purposes.
Chandeliers
- Typically feature multiple light sources
- Provide broader light coverage
- Often become a focal point, even when the lights are off
- Well suited for dining rooms, living rooms and entryways
Pendant lights
- Usually feature a single light source
- Create more focused lighting
- Work well above kitchen islands and counters
- Often fit comfortably in smaller spaces
The right choice comes down to how much light you need and the role the fixture will play in your room.
What type of chandelier lighting is best?
A well-chosen chandelier light doesn’t need to outshine everything else in the room. It simply needs to provide the right amount of light for the way you live.
Above a dining table, chandeliers should generally be about one-half to two-thirds the width of the table. This helps create visual balance while leaving enough space around the edges.
For a foyer chandelier, a common guideline is to add the room’s length and width in feet. The total can be used as a starting point for the light’s diameter. For example, a room measuring 12 feet by 14 feet may suit a fixture around 26 inches wide.
The number of lights matters, too. Larger rooms often benefit from multiple bulbs for broader coverage, while smaller spaces may feel more comfortable with fewer lights.
How high to hang a chandelier based on location
Hang a ceiling light too high and it disappears. Too low and it gets in the way.
Above a dining table, the bottom of a chandelier should generally hang 30–36 inches above the tabletop. If the ceiling is higher than 8 feet, add about 3 inches for each additional foot of ceiling height.
For a foyer chandelier or in a living room, leave at least 7 feet of clearance between the floor and the bottom of the fixture.
