Notice from IKEA Korea regarding the re-announcement of the recall of chest of drawers in the US
Dear IKEA customers,
On Tuesday November 21, 2017, a re-announcement was made on the recall of certain IKEA chest of drawers in the US. IKEA US and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have decided to re-announce the June 2016 chest of drawers recall in order to communicate once again the importance of wall anchoring for a safe life at home.
On September 20, 2016, IKEA Korea stopped selling certain chest of drawers that were found to be non-compliant with the new preliminary safety standard of the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), which are the requirements in ASTM (Standard Safety Specification for Clothing Storage Units) F2057-14. IKEA Korea has also been providing tip-over restraint kits and wall anchoring services, as well as refunds to customers who cannot anchor their chest of drawers to the wall. Since December 2016, all chest of drawers sold in our stores are compliant with the new local standards. We are also communicating about safe use of chest of drawers and ask our customers to sign a consent form agreeing to wall anchoring of their chest of drawers; these efforts for product safety will continue.
Accidents related to furniture tip-over is a serious home safety issue for the entire home furnishing industry.
The safest solution for the use of all chest of drawers is to secure them to the wall. IKEA chests of drawers are safe when anchored to the wall as per the assembly instruction using the tip over restraint provided with the product. To create safe homes, we have for decades provided tip over restraints with furniture that needs to be secured and wall attachment is part of the assembly instructions. We have no information of any tip over incidents with a properly anchored chest of drawer.
IKEA Korea urges all customers who has bought IKEA chests of drawers to inspect their products and to ensure that they are securely anchored to the wall according to assembly instructions. If you are unsure please contact IKEA Customer Support Centre to gain more information.
