Kitchen safety and living with children

Safety in the kitchen is absolutely central, both for those using it and for any children you have around – different stages of growing up come with different degrees of curious exploration. That’s why it’s important to work as much safety as possible into your kitchen as well as your cooking.

Child locks on

Make sure to use all available child locks, not least where your children could burn themselves. Like on this compact unit with gas oven and microwave in one. It’s packed with smart cooking functions – and of course they should all be kept away from curious fingers with the built-in lock.

Safety built in from the start

Generous worktop surfaces close to the hob and oven always give you somewhere to unload hot pots and dishes quickly and safely, preferably on a sturdy trivet. If you’re in the planning stages of a new kitchen, also make sure to place the sink and the cooking unit on the same side to avoid hot spills.

How to handle hot stuff

Pot holders are mainly just that – meant to be used for holding pots and pans. Oven gloves are better for all-round purposes as they also can be used for taking dishes and tins from the oven with a firm hand.

Softening sharp edges

Placing corner bumpers on tables and countertops with sharp edges and corners is an easy safety measure to avoid children getting injured when they’re playing around. These are self-adhesive so it’s easy sticking one on where it looks like someone could get hurt.

Don’t forget electrical hazards

Remember to keep electric appliances and cables out of reach for small children. It’s also a good idea to plug any wall sockets you’re not using at the moment. These safety plugs are easy to install and remove with the enclosed tool and you can use them both in earthed and unearthed sockets.
