Classic furniture designs, reimagined

06 August 2018

Love the vintage look? Then be inspired by stylish decades gone by with these design classics being reimagined and re-released for 2018…

Reimagining the classics

If you like to mix a touch of vintage in with your newer furniture look out for IKEA’s new collection which celebrates some of their most iconic products from decades gone by. The vintage styles of yesteryear are returning, as classic pieces start appearing in store and online. Look out for the first release of brilliant designs from the 50s and 60s this August, then subsequent decades in October and December. Their reinvention is your chance to own a classic design you can keep forever.

The 50s and 60s

In August IKEA will celebrate their earliest iconic designs from the fab 50s and swinging 60s. This includes one of the first flat-pack furniture products, the LÖVET (now LÖVBACKEN) side table, a classic design that looks better than ever today. For more mid-century style, the dark woods and clean lines of the era are embodied in the EKENÄSET armchair – an original design that’s as comfortable as it is stylish.

The 70s and 80s

Welcome the funky 70s and bold 80s back with design trends in bright primary colours, available from October. Their iconic KLIPPAN sofa will be available in a new palette of vivid colours, including retro red, yellow and blue. The RÅANE armchair (originally JÄRPEN) designed by Niels Gammelgaard is another classic design. This comfortable and trendy mesh chair graced many a stylish home following its initial release in 1983.

The 90s and 00s

Later on this year, IKEA will be celebrating our designs of the cool 90s and 00s. Pretty blues and strong reds will lead the colour palette, married with the blonde, untreated woods that defined our homes in the noughties. Minimal must-haves include the modern and neat PS 1995 storage bench with wheels on one end that was desired by so many people at the time. To add a bold edge, the SIPPURATA graphic patterns make ideal cushion covers. Look out for these launching in December 2018.

Clotilde Passalacqua

Clotilde Passalacqua, interior design leader for IKEA UK and Ireland, commented: “The new re-imagined classics collection is to be kept and looked after in the home forever. The products within the collection were favourites when they were first introduced, and IKEA is showing that these designs are still relevant now - decades after they were first created.”
