Misleading itemAnonymous reviewerDo not buy if you want one seamless unit,it is not the item advertised. Ikea have dropped their usually high standards. This is a completely misleading item. It is not the item being advertised. In fact it is 3 separate bookcases with no instructions or fittings to connect them. In addition to the three separate bookcases there are three separate extention boxes to fit on the top. The item looks messy and 'wonky'. We have uneven floor and old walls so it's impossible for the unit to look like one unit. It was advertised as one unit. It has absolutely no reference to being six separate pieces that have no connecting fittings. This item should come with connectors between the three separate bookcases. At the very least Ikea should mention in it's advertising that it is three separate units just standing next to one another. If they had I would 100% not of bought item. I'm so disappointed, I spent 40 minutes of my time on the phone trying to get a solution,absolutely none was offered.1

VersatileAnonymous reviewerBought a number of these bookcases to create a reading room. As there are various sizes I was able to complete a run of one whole wall. Easy to follow instructions and all the pieces present. As usual IKEA have pulled it out of the bag5
Could be betterAnonymous reviewerThe Billy bookcase has 2 problems mentioned before: (1) the adjacent parts have no connection between them, the only way to align the parts is fixing to the wall at the top, and only works if the floor is perfectly flat. It is just a few fixing screws to add to the bookcase parts, and they are not supplied (2) the cutouts for the floor skirtings are too low, no one has 8cm skirtings anymore. IKEA needs to change all their designs to higher skirtings, 10cm min, it’s always a problem, for many years now4
Good but description misleadingAnonymous reviewerThe bookcase appears to be well made, however as another reviewer pointed out I was not expecting three separate columns and an extension on top. It appears sturdy enough. Customer service was excellent in explaining the "modular" structure. I would recommend this to a friend but I would highlight that it is three individual bookcases and not a real modular design that plugs in together.3

What is particleboard?

Particleboard is made from recycled wood and sawmill leftovers – so wood pieces with the wrong shade, woodchips and sawdust become a resource instead of possibly being discarded. We use boards for things like bookcases, bed frames, sofas and kitchen frames. To protect from wear and moisture, we apply varnish, veneer or foil that adds to the furniture's look.
