When is it safe for a child to start using a duvet?
For babies under 12 months, it's best to avoid using pillows or duvets altogether due to the risk of suffocation. Once your child is over one year old, you can start introducing these bedding items, but always ensure they are appropriate for their age and size.
What tog rating is suitable for a child's duvet?
As your child grows into toddlerhood, typically around two years old, they can start using a duvet with a higher tog rating. Before that, stick to lighter togs (4-9), keeping in mind that young children usually have an easier time keeping warm under a duvet than an adult would. That is unless the bedroom temperature is very low.
For children over the age of three, a duvet with a tog rating of 4.5 is often enough, as long as the bedroom maintains a steady temperature. As the winter chill sets in and temperatures drop, you might want to consider switching to a 7-7,5 tog duvet to ensure your little one stays snug and warm.
Practical tips for maintaining children's duvets
Keep your child's duvet in top condition for maximum comfort. Always follow the care instructions on the label, and consider using a duvet cover to protect against spills and stains. Washing the duvet cover frequently and thoroughly airing it out will help keep it fresh.
Consider complementing the duvet with a pillow specifically made for children, as it can further increase comfort. You should then look for pillows that offer the right balance of support and softness.
