Episode 5

Jade and Joe, met whilst working on a cruise ship in Australia five years ago. Both avid collectors, Joe has almost ten guitars in the flat, with an additional thirty at his parents. Jade is also the proud owner of over eighty salt and pepper shakers! Despite their creative and social lives together, they find themselves constrained by their cluttered two bedroom flat.

Kitchen

Before

The smaller than average kitchen proved challenging. It was the least used space in the flat and it lacked functional storage and work surface. The couple love to cook, entertain and buy food in bulk, and their kitchen didn't meet their needs. The room felt dark and cluttered adding to the cramped feeling.

After

Clever small space solutions are added to the space, with folding chairs and table and tall cabinets that use the full height of the wall to maximise the available space for storage. Additional shelving provides plenty of space for bulk purchases. The kitchen is designed to make cooking easier with easy access between the sink, cooker and fridge.

Living room

Before

The living room had many different activities taking place within the same place. The corner sofa was uncomfortable and was too large for the space, the dining table was not useable and there was nowhere to entertain in the space. The walls were painted grey which didn't help the feeling of space. Jade and Joe were eating three meals a day on the sofa.

After

By reducing the size of the seating furniture, a dual zone living diner is created. DOCKSTA round table has a smaller footprint than a rectangular table, creating surface area, without losing as much floor space. Lighting is used to help support the functions and zone within the separate activities. A brighter colour scheme with decorations and plants help to create the feeling of space and cosiness. Jade's artwork is proudly displayed on the walls and soft textiles help to bring the colour scheme together.

Studio

Before

Joe is a part time musician and Jade is a keen amateur painter, their spare room was converted into a studio for them, however the space was not working well. There was little floor space visible, with a need for more functional storage. Using the room at the same time proved to be difficult. It was the most used space in the flat, but the space was cluttered and cramped.

After

A new creative studio for their art and music is created. FREDDE desk is large and has built in shelving storage, to create a workspace for Joe to create music and help keep the studio more organised. Floor space is saved by hanging guitars on the wall and a bespoke racking solution for organising and stacking artwork safely. The room is decorated to make the space feel bright and airy and inspire creativity, whilst clever colour blocking helps to divide the space.
