How to wash your patio cushions and care for your outdoor fabric

Most of our outdoor cushions are made from durable polyester, a fade resistant fabric that helps the colour stay fresh for longer, making it perfect for outdoor use. Follow these care instructions to learn how to wash your patio cushions and keep your fabric looking great. 

We recommend washing your outdoor cushion covers at the beginning of the summer before using them, and at the end of the summer when you are ready to store them. 

1. Preparation: Start by removing the cushions from the outdoor furniture. Shake, or brush off any loose dirt or debris. This will make cleaning your outdoor cushions easier. You can also use a hand-held vacuum for this step.
2. Spot cleaning: For small stains or spots, we recommend using a damp cloth with a mild detergent mixed with water. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as they can damage the outdoor cushion fabric. Apply the solution to the stained area and gently scrub with a soft brush or sponge to remove the dirt. Then pat the cushion with a clean damp towel.
3. Washing: For machine-washable fabric, use a normal cycle with warm water and a mild detergent. Remember to close the zipper before washing. More delicate fabrics should be hand-washed in warm water with a mild detergent. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals as they may damage the fabric. Always refer to the care label on the cushions for specific washing instructions. Remember not to wash the inner cushions.
4. Drying: Air-dry the cushions in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Fluff and reshape the cushions while they are still slightly damp. If they can be tumble dried, dry on low settings. Avoid using high heat as it can shrink or damage the fabric.
5. Storing: Whether it is storing day to day throughout the season to protect from the elements, or storing away for the season, it's important to store cushions away to help them last year over year. Store outdoor cushions and covers in a cool, dry place indoors, or in a storage bag or storage box when not in use. Make sure the cushion is completely dry before storing it away in a storage bag or storage box.
