great bed for my daughter IsabelleMy daughter is 5 and a half and she loves this bed. I would not recommend to a child that is scared of heights. My only concern is the very narrow stairs on the ladder my daughter complained it hurt her feet so I ordered some soft foam tape to fix this problem. The bed is quite high so make sure to measure your room before purchasing. Overall I am very happy with the bed as for it creates a small bedroom space for her in my small space.4
Good product. Challenging assemble process. A few points to note before buying.Donald[] OVERALL Tall space under the bed. Thus, limited vertical space on bed. Before purchase: 1. Measure the height of your room ceiling. 2. Check fire sprinklers that may be blocking movement. 3. Check mattress thickness if you already have one. [] CONS 1. The steps of the ladder are narrow. Painful to step on. 2. Cloths are not removable for washing (unless you take the whole thing off and re-assemble it). 3. The safety strips (#130852) are almost useless. It will deform when the screws are tighten, making the screw head 'escape' from the strip holes. [] ASSEMBLE VERY challenging. Basically you only tighten all screws at 60-70%, set the whole bed up, and then go back to tighten all screws to 80% from one end to another, and then 90%, and then 100%. If you start with any screw at 100%, chances are the bed frame will turn into a rhombus (slightly), with some screws you can not even align with the pre-drilled holes. Patience is the key. Prepare to spend 4-6 hours on this.4
Too high and difficult to buildAlexandraI should’ve checked the height more carefully and measured my room. It would work better with a high ceiling, but for us my son can barely sit up without his head touching. He’s six. It’s also a bit alarming having him up so high - but by the time he grows into it he will be too tall for it to be comfortable in our space. The bed is shaky, but we haven’t fastened it to the wall yet. Still, I would expect it to be a bit more solid already. Assembly was very tedious and frustrating. The desk attachment is great and I’m sure it works well for the right space! We will be returning it.2
Ripped sheet replacementAzimThe bed is great in overall. However, the side sheet was ripped. It's over one year that I bought the bed. Wondering if Ikea has it in store to replace.4
Loft bedTamiNo English instructions on how to put this bed together. Also they don't tell you that you need to buy the foam mattress.3
Vitval loftPaulThe bed itself is too tall, a toddler who the bed is designed for is inches from hitting the ceiling while sitting upright. Also the instructions are very vague which prolonged the time to assemble. 3
Awesome purchase MikeSuper easy to put together. Not sure why so many people complained about the setup. READ the manual and you’ll be fine. 5
Inaccurate measurementsAnonymous reviewerIn the description, the total length of the bed is 197 cm, but the length to the stairs is not indicated. Or at least indicate the width of the stairs so that you can calculate the remaining space under this bed yourself. This greatly complicates the process of choosing this product. I had to go to the store myself to measure this distance, but this product was not in the showroom.3
Our favorite bedAllaMy daughter and I are very happy with the bed! It's stylish, reliable and comfortable!5
Strong and very beautiful DuniaMy daughter loves you loft bed. She put her desk underneath. Gave her more space in her small room. 5
We really like the loftDanielleWe really like the loft bed. It is exactly what we needed. But putting it together was super hard. I still think I didn’t put it together properly since some pieces don’t line up to be screwed together.4
True to its pictureTemitolaWhat you see in the picture and discription is what you will get.5
Cute bed but sooo long to put together Anonymous reviewerAs a seasoned ikea builder, this piece was HARD to figure out. Instructions were more vague than usual. Took over 6 hours to put this bed together. But once you get past the painful assembly, it’s great piece especially for the value! 3
Gives so much spaceSandraVery sturdy and gives lots of space below to maximize the space in. Small room5
It’s so close to being greatJessicaIt’s a process so be prepared for a whole day of building. I have a brain for IKEA instructions and my partner doesn’t so he found it confusing but I didn’t. They’re pretty standard IKEA instructions but because it’s a big, multi-step build, be prepared to get confused at points. They look great. Our ceilings are vaulted so the beds aren’t too tall if they weren’t, I don’t think they would work well. Plus now that they’re built and being used, they squeak like CRAZY. With no plastic washers and no buffer between all the metal pieces, every time my kids move around it is SO SO loud. IKEA needs to add pads on the joints and contact points and provide plastic washers so it’s not just metal on metal. I’m going to have to go through both beds and put buffer material on myself because it’s waking me up in the night from the other room. So while I would recommend this bed you’d have to have the perfect circumstances for it to work in a space and prep your build with some buffer material!4
Nice bed!KatherineThis bed works well for my 8 year old. It took some time to put together took most of the day. You will need an extra hand to put together at one point. I will say that the wall anchor pieces could be longer for homes with thicker baseboards.4
Decent bed.AlexThe Vitval is a good bed to have more space, but the major problem with it is probably squeaking. but other than that, it is a good bed to have in small spaces. (just make sure the ceiling isn't too low).4
Loft bedSarahLove the space this bed provides underneath in a small room. Instructions were lacking details usually found in Ikea instructions but I was able to put the bed together by myself until the last few steps within 4 hours. It is essential to leave all bolts loose until the very end- that’s the biggest trick to a fast, frustration free build. Once completed, the bed is solid but shook when I was trying to put the sheets on - you can’t make the bed from the ground as it’s too high up. Very pleased with this purchase and recommend for youth- teens.5
Perfect loft bedJenniferWe bought this for our daughters tiny bedroom. Setup was 4 hours for one person and *not putting sections together too tightly* was key. We had a section that didn’t line up, we loosened the screws and it came together. It’s sturdy and hasn’t been creaky, we tightened up the screws after two weeks of use. This is perfect for a small space.5
Sleek and sturdyStephenVery nice product for the price. Neutral white colour makes it complement any decor. Assembly is a full day project and you need to double check the instructions but it goes together well.5

More relaxing, less materials

Where do your children spend most of their waking hours at home? Quite likely the answer is in their bed. Because when life for slightly older children today often revolves around phones, tablets and friends, a lot more space than that “hub” isn’t really needed. With VITVAL loft bed and bunk bed, we wanted to make comfortable and cozy beds for all children who prefer hanging out there. But the goal was also to considerably reduce the amount of materials to save on nature's resources.

Metal is a durable and stable material and really suited VITVAL bed frames. The question was just how much we could reduce the amount of the metal used without decreasing stability and safety. Product developer Anna Carme and her colleagues performed detailed calculations and safety tests. "We came a long way", says Anna. "But it was not enough ― we thought the bed frames were still too heavy."

30% less metal

Experimenting with materials led to the team replacing the bed's edges with fabric. This meant that they managed to reduce the amount of metal by almost one third compared to similar beds. "We found a strong polyester material that also gives the bed a nice and cozy feel ― both when the children hang out there with friends and when it’s time to sleep."

Easy to assemble

"The fabric is mounted on the frame", explains Anna. "And to ensure that the assembly is simple for all parents, we invited a number of people to test it out." The tests then led to the team dividing the fabric into sections and making the yellow edge bands more flexible so that they are easier to pull on. "I love playing detective, to look for and investigate what we have for different alternatives", says Anna. "Nothing beats the feeling when you finally find a good solution."

Form design process

More relaxing, less materials

The idea with VITVAL loft bed and bunk bed was to make comfortable and cozy beds for all children who like hanging out with their phones, tablets and friends. But we also wanted to save on nature’s resources and limit the amount of metal in the beds. So how do you achieve two so different goals at the same time? Our solution was to make the bed edges out of a strong polyester fabric that gave the bed a nice and cozy feel ― and we thereby reduced the metal by 30% in each bed.

Material

What is steel?

Steel has unique characteristics when it is stretched and shaped since it remains strong. It provides strength to everything from skyscrapers and cars to bed frames and outdoor furniture. The steel industry is moving in the direction of more energy-efficient production and stronger steel qualities. It doesn’t lose any of its properties when recycled and today steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world.
