Ratings and reviews

difficult assembly but looks great!HaileyI wanted to leave a review because I held off on buying these for a while due to other reviews about bent wood. But I really wanted the look of the shelves, so I risked it. I did have one shelf that was quite challenging to assemble because of one of the wood pieces being bent, BUT, you can get it together; it just takes time. I tied some rope around the pieces and also used a heat gun to flex it into place, and now it looks great. It was a pain to do, but it is workable!4
Good quality like alwaysMonikaI bought those shelves already years ago and keep buying more. They are easy to assemble and adjust for hight and are perfect for storing anything from tools to boxes to clothing. They can be painted or left raw and look great either way.4
Assembly ChangeRoyleenWhy has the side unit been changed from being one unit into having to assemble it. I have been buying IVAR for over 30 years and have never been so annoyed with this change. Please change it back to what it used to be. I am 78 years old and have never had issues with assembling my IVAR units until now. It make no sense to change what was working. Unless it returns to being a completely preassembled unit then I will no longer be purchasing IVAR shelving. PLEASE CHANGE BACK.1
50cm deep not available AlizahWhy wouldn’t this be in the 50cm deep size as well. This is the best unit for under the stairs. The deep ones will just fill up the space. But no, IKEA decides not to have it.1
Tough assembly EmmaRequired a lot of hammering to get these built. 2
Twisted and warpedArslanHeard a lot of good about the IVAR so I ordered a set and planned to finish and stain them, come to find they're twisted and bowed and can't actually be assembled...shelves don't fit and lower cabinets aren't flush. Weeks of staining and $600 down the drain1
Goodbye streamlined DeniseNo way to get all the closed shelving units flush with the top, since there is a top metal bracket that needs to be lower than this side unit frame. If you plan to have a wall of these, it won’t look sleek anymore. Poor redesign. Miss the old bottom ledge piece that you could just boost the cabinet height with.2
Impossible to assemble new sidesAnonymous reviewerI wanted to extend the height of my existing IVAR shelves and bought the tallest sides available. The new side units come in pieces and the holes were misaligned for both units I purchased. I turned the pieces in all directions to try to make it work but ended up returning them after wasting 3 hours of my life. Extremely disappointed in the new sides. The old preassembled side units were much better and felt sturdier. I also noticed the new ones are slightly lighter in colour.1
Love IVAR!CarmenDisappointing you now make the consumer put the shelf together, making it quite challenging. I have many IVAR in my home and the first one that left me disappointed. In store, no one could find it on the shelf due to change in packaging that made it hard to find after going to both stores in Montreal- Boucherville3
Old and new versionsEverettI have purchased IVAR at various times in the past, and am here looking at the product online as I was planning to buy a third side piece in order to extend my unit. My previous two side pieces were pre-made, and one was very slightly misaligned. Unfortunately, we had purchased a drawer and rattan doors for the unit, and they were I credibly difficult to assemble and adjust on one side (the other is fine/easy). The two sides very slightly point inward, not ideal. Now, planning on acquiring another section, I see that the side piece comes in pieces and must be assembled, but the parts tend not to be machined correctly and an average of an hour is needed - no thank you. I don’t think I will buy further IVAR components. 2
Assembling IVARBasilIVAR is a wonderful product but quite difficult for one person to assemble alone. It would help immensely if IKEA provided guidance on where to place cross-braces to achieve stability. My 3 bays of shelving became easy to put together once I realized a cross-braced centre unit would make the whole assembly solid and steady.5
Hate the new sidesBarbaraReally disappointed to have to assemble the side rails and the fact that deep cabinets are no longer available. I have been using Ivar for 30 years and love them. They’ve gone from house to house. Simple but too fiddle and time consuming and noisy to assemble the sides now especially since the fitting is not very accurate. I’m surprised IKEA- quality control3
Shorter ivar side unitsAlizahIt looks like IKEA Canada does not carry the shorter Ivar side units anymore. These were the best hide for under the stair, under bulkhead shelving. It was also what was needed to the Ivar desk set up. Please bring it back!3
Hate the New Side Rails!MichelleMy entire work studio features Ivar, and I also used Ivar for my booth displays at trade and retail shows. It is so useful and modular, but my latest extension of the unit required purchasing more side rails and boy did assembling them ever cause a lot of frustration. The savings is not worth the trouble and tears. I would much rather have the old side rails back. I do really like the new metal shelves though.1
Ruined the easy assemblyAllieMe and everyone else out here wondering why the IVAR changed from the easy to assemble setup to the side that have to be put together, with a bunch of hammering poorly cut pegs into holes that don’t align. Used to be my favourite IKEA product and now just so frustrating to deal with. Would rather pay a higher price for the product I used to love.2
Simple enough to assemble and installKevinI 100% get the idea of assembling the side rails. It keeps costs down for IKEA and for use the purchasers. I found the assembly fairly intuitive and not at all difficult using my everyday hammer and the supplied wooden block. There was a little skill needed to get the cross brace on and to balance it carefully while I got all 4 screws in place. With my level, I found it fairly easy to get it both level and plumb. Very happy with this product in my office as a means to handle the clutter. It is great for providing a "rack" of sorts for thge assembly on odd mini-pcs I have.5
Horrible assemblyAnonymous reviewerHow much is IKEA saving by selling it disassembled, really? It makes horrendous noise, you need to use a hammer for every single joint, and the pieces are flimsy it takes forever to finish a joint. Not to mention the safety issues that come with requiring a hammer for everything.1
From best to worst productNicoleSelling the side units disassembled has made what was one of IKEAs best products into the worst. I have an entire pantry and storage using IVAR and needed just one more new side unit to finish the room. Just this one side unit has taken me over an hour of tedious hammering as none of the pieces slot in flush nor easily. So disappointing. I would have been done my setup by now with the preassembled side unit. 1
You've ruined IVARSamirYou used to have a simple product to install. Now with the unassembled rails, it has become a nightmare ...1
IVAR Shelving Units BrendaGreat shelves for additional storage in my basement. Very easy to build. Make sure that you have all of the shelf pegs before leaving the store!5
