The IKEA sustainability strategy

We have big ambitions for 2030. We are determined to do our part in addressing climate change, unsustainable consumption patterns and inequality. In doing so, we focus on three areas: Healthy and sustainable living, circularity and climate positivity and pursuing fair work and equality.

Healthy and sustainable living

At IKEA Zaventem, we want to inspire as many people as possible to live healthier and more sustainable lives. From healthy eating and products to avoid food waste, to using sustainable materials and solutions to extend the life of products.

1,900 pieces of IKEA furniture have been given a second life.*

If your old IKEA furniture is still in good condition, you can give it a second life and thus produce less waste. We'll give you an IKEA giftcard in exchange and resell your old furniture for you. (IKEA Zaventem from 01/09/'23 to 1/06/'24)

Recycling mentality and climate positive

Working more and more circularly and becoming climate-positive and regenerating raw materials and resources as IKEA continues to grow.

Last mile delivery

60,5% of last-mile deliveries were emission-free*

In 2022, IKEA Belgium started initiatives for emission-free last-mile deliveries. Since then, in collaboration with our service partners, we have expanded our fleet of electric vehicles. (* IKEA Zaventem between 1/06/2023 and 01/02/2024)

't pasrel - shelter

Together with families in difficult living situations, 't Pasrel seeks new perspective

They offer short-term assistance that aims to get families moving. Our collaboration with 't Pasrel in March 2024: A complete makeover of the living space in Halle and in May 2024: Donation & installation of a new kitchen in Schaarbeek.

Nasci

Disadvantaged pregnant women, single mothers and families in the Brussels area find support at NASCI

This is an independent, accessible, child-friendly home for qualitative professional assistance. Our collaboration since 11/2023: Bi-monthly donation of clothing, school supplies and toys thanks to our staff's giveaway closet.

Volunteer

Since 2022, IKEA Belgium has offered its employees the opportunity to volunteer during their hours

More than 770 employees supported 17 organizations across Belgium to make the daily lives of the most vulnerable single-parent families a little better and more beautiful. Between October '23 and June '24, 44 IKEA Zaventem employees volunteered.
