Easy assembling; actually quite a sturdy shelfKaPutting on the steel cross, which is the last step of assembling, is actually a bit tricky. Make sure the shelf is orthogonal (not slanting left or right), then mark both the upper screw hole on each side of the steel cross before fastening any screws
Great Shelves, Bad Building ExperienceMarkI love the IVAR system as it is very flexible. I would normally give IVAR a 4-5 star rating. But I had to build the frames this time around. I don't know if it was just a one-off event though. But if this the new norm, why they went from having the side frames pre-built to now having to build them ourselves is a bad decision in my book. I mean they are light enough and small enough to not need to be flat packed in my opinion. A bad decision, and it will make me question buying them in the future.
Not robust enough.GregMaterials good, but the design is deficient. Way too flimsy even with the bracing. If you don't screw it to a wall it is not anywhere near robust enough.
Lots of work to do before it’s readyRogerYou need to spend a fair amount of time and effort on this to get it looking and staying nice. This means lots of sanding and then varnishing. Despite the way the shelves are made, there are lots of knots in the wood (yes, natural features, but of cheap bits of wood); the pine is also very soft and easily dented in the warehouse, in the car on the way home and putting it all together.
But what really cheesed me off was all the stickers IKEA slaps all over them, which leave residue on the surface. Especially the “permanent sticker” on the uprights - hej IKEA, it’s not permanent because I removed it. It’s raw timber, ideal for staining and/or varnishing, but not with a sticker or sticker goo all over it. More sanding. Thank you very much.
The self assembly uprights were OK to put together because I have a big bench to do it on and a hefty rubber mallet came in handy too.
Overall quality at the end of the day was fine, but the merciless cutting of costs will eventually bite.
Doubled the tiny kitchen spaceRebekahShelves are deep enough for a microwave, and sturdy. We needed an economical, yet solid option to add to a very small kitchen. We also purchased the BEKVAM kitchen trolley which sits alongside this as a coffee station. It allowed us to move most of the appliances away from the valuable tiny built in bench space, and we've been able to effectively double the kitchen storage with this solution.
good for storageMichelleIt works well in the garage, can hold a lot of stuff.
