These never date and are easy to assembleMelanieWe have many of these and have been buying them for decades. As the design has changed little over the years they’ve become a mainstay as they seem to last and last and go with changes in decor. Easy to put together and incredibly solid, we think they’re great. The only thing which frustrates me is that the colour we prefer is so much dearer than the others. That’s my only gripe though. Cheap WrappingAmandaI used to love the BILLY bookcases and already owned several black ones, so I recently bought more to match my existing shelves. Unfortunately, the quality has noticeably declined.
My older bookcases have a durable laminate finish over particle board and have held up really well over the years. The new ones have what feels like a thin wrap that marks and scuffs incredibly easily. To make matters worse, two of the shelves arrived with the wrapping already damaged inside the packaging.
They're still easy to assemble, but that's about the only positive. The price has also increased, yet the quality has gone backwards. Spending almost $400 on bookcases that already show damage before being used is incredibly disappointing. The original BILLYs felt like furniture built to last, but these don't. I expected much better from a product that has always had such a good reputation.
